Hello,
hoping someone may be able to advise regarding my T3 California. The problem is that the right hand exhaust pipe is glowing cherry red after about a 3 mile run. I have double checked valve clearances and spark plug is a good colour and the bike runs perfectly. left cylinder is fine and i only noticed having been riding in the dark and it was really glowing red when i stopped.
Thanks in advance
Try checking the right choke plunger is bottoming, you need to have a little slack in the cable
That sound most odd. Overheating is generally a sign of running lean or the ignition timing is off. I would suggest the latter being the most likely.
Of course the pipes will start to glow if you leave the engine running for a period of time before setting off on a ride as there would be no cooling flow of air over the pipes to disipate the heat.
Thank you for the reply.
The cherry pipe is after riding on the road with no traffic so good airflow, only .
Ignition is Dyna 111 and bike starts and runs well.
Thank you for the reply, I will have a llok at the choke when i get a chance. Dose’nt appear to be running rich judging by plug colour.
Does it have stainless downpipes or the original twin wall factory items?
The right hand downpipe does get hotter as the bend of the pipe is closer to the head than on the left hand side. The right cylinder sits slightly in front of the left one if you look from above.
I’d agree with some others here - Choke will not make it run hot - more likely to be Ignition timing even though its an electronic system - setup may be a bit out?
Thanks for your reply.
It has stainless downpipes .
Thank you for the reply,
I will check the ignition timing.
Retarded ignition timing will cause a pipe to glow red. Though I don’t know if it is possible on your model for one side to become retarded and not both.
I think the Tonti bikes have twin points in the distributors, unlike our old loops Dave. Hence each cylinder could be running different timing.

I didn’t read the post properly and now see that the bike has electronic ignition. If it had points then there may have some possibility of one side being retarded but as it is this seems unlightly.
Most electronic ignitions it is easy to get one side a tad advanced and the other side slightly retarded.
How does that work Don ?
It’s just what I found when setting up the Newtronics system on my Spada. Moving the distributor to set one side and then moving the single backplate to set the other, It was a fiddle to get them just right.
thanks for the input I will try and check the electronic ignition when i get a chance
If its Newtronic the optical pick ups are mounted on the original points mounts one of which is moveable so one side or both can be out.
Thanks for the info. Mine is a Dyna 111 but i have not had time to have a proper look at it yet
