Refitting the tank, any tips?

The front two tank bolts on my e5+, don’t screw into the frame, there is 3 sided clip that has a hole top and bottom that goes around the frame tube, so you have to thread the bolt through the hole in the tank , through the top of the clip, through the frame hole and out the lower hole in the clip.

The clip moves.

I’m finding really tricky and time consuming getting them all lined up. Even with a helper it took way too long, and just as you think you have it, you nudge the clip on the other side out of place. It’s maddening. I’m just wondering if there is a knack to this, I can’t believe shops do this with so much hassle. just to clarify I’m not removing the rear bolt just loosening enough to lift the front of the tank.

If anyone knows the trick to this please share! Thanks!

does yours look like the above? my clips stayed in place (probably dirt and rust) but perhaps a strip of duct tape would stop yours moving around?

I think i did actually use a screwdriver through the holes the wobble one into place when I refitted the tank, now I think back. I did it on my own so if you have a helper and the design is the same it should be doable if you can keep it reasonably close the the hole and use a screwdriver or other round bar for the final adjustment

Yes, that’s the devils. and notice on the inside there is a bur to hold it sort of in place but they escape from that. I used a long allen key to do as you suggested, one person doing that and the next grabbing the bolt when it “looks” aligned. problem is as you’re jiggling it the tank nudges the clip on the other side out of place. There no room to get in and apply tape at that point. But agree the only real fix is probably to remove the tank entirely and then tape them in place some how. Just wanted to make sure I hadn’t missed a trick like using a cocktail stick or something from below. Not that access is easy. Thanks for the reply

I don’t know if it makes any difference but I did front first and then rear when refitting, but I had taken mine off completely.

Those things are “speed nuts” they have a little internal sprung plate to grip the item they are mounted on but when they get distorted (e.g. by me pushing the allen screw to find the hole) it slackens that sprung plate off. Every now and again i remove them and squeeze the sprung plate tighter again with snipe nose pliers.
