Removal of digiplex.

Hi guys, I have recently aquired a Cali 3 1000 (1994) which is a non runner due to wiring issues.

A previous owner had wanted to install an alarm and extra lights and the unfortunate result is a wiring harness which is now in an unserviceable state.

I plan to make a new harness for the bike from scratch and my question is this.

Can I remove the digiplex set up and replace it with a pulse generator and contact set up? Has anyone done this before that could offer advice?

There were three digiplex units in a box of spares that came along with the bike so suspect there has been some issues there.

I know it sounds like a backward step as far as technology is concerned but I’m old school and like the old set up.

Alex.

That’s a deep, deep rabbit hole, starting with the alternator. Is yours fitted with a Bosch or a Saprisa alternator? If it’s Bosch, the rabbit hole ain’t so deep. If it’s Saprisa, the rabbit hole could be both deep and expensive.

Lol… I don’t like the sound of deep hole and expensive! and unfortunately I think my bike is fitted with the saprisa system  I’m just beginning to realise what is involved and think a bit more research is needed before committing myself, so it’s back to a basic rewire for the time being.

If you can, dump the Saprisa alternator in favour of a Bosch one and rewire accordingly i.e. 850-T3. Try and separate out the Digiplex wiring so that it is a sub-loom completely separate from the main loom. Reason follows…

Although the Saprisa is listed as having a few watts more output than the Bosch, the Saprisa is more prone to failure. My guess is overheating because the Saprisa has at least two rectifying didoes mounted inside the alternator as well as the obvious reg/rec mounted on the frame. That also puts you part-way down the expensive rabbit hole; the rest of the hole consists of fitting either a Silent Hektik or a Sahse ignition system.

Now, the promised reason for making the Digiplex a separate sub-loom. When/if you decide to go for the Silent Hektik or Sahse ignition systems, all you have to do is unplug and dump the Digiplex sub-loom. No additional rewiring necessary. Unfortunately neither company make a system to fit the Saprisa (Stein-Dinse refer to it as a ‘Ducati’ alternator. Poor Ducatis…).

[Edit] Wrong guess regarding the Digiplex (idiot me). The Digiplex pickup unit occupies the distributor. I’m away to do some more research on valve sizes, cam timings and advance curves but I think we may have an answer to your problem

Interesting. I’ve learned something new today - the Cali 3 with PHF36 carbs has bigger valves than the Cali 3 with fuel injection. So… no cheap conversion unless the FI advance curve is the same as e.g. the V1000G5. Which one do you have?

I’m learning a lot very quickly here! The bike has 36mm carbs fitted and from the info I can find has medium size valves.

Your memory serves you well DaiG, the block does indeed have a blanked off hole where the distributor would have been fitted but alas the camshaft doesn’t have the worm drive on the end.

I’m now revising my thoughts about changing things for the time being, it looks like it would be expensive, and will try and get the bike on the road in its original form.

Yep, end of the cheap road. Shame.
