I need to replace the rubber gaiter that fits over the UJ from gearbox to swing-arm/driveshaft and am looking for the best way to do this. Any hints or tips would be appreciated.
I’m thinking: rear brake calliper off, shocks off, swing arm pivot bolts off. I’m not sure the rear wheel needs to come off, but it might make manoeuvring the swing arm assembly easier.
Will the UJ just pull off the gearbox output shaft, or, can the UJ be pulled off the driveshaft? (or are UK and shaft all one piece?)
Looking at the workshop manual, there’s various parts at the end of the drive shaft - a spring, a sleeve etc. Does the bevel box need to be separated from the swing arm?
Long time since i did a small block swing arm, but i used to remove the wheel and the bevel box to make it easier and feel for sideplay on re-assembly.
If i recall correctly the only tricky bit was getting the uj off (and on) over the snap-ring on the output shaft . I found that they responded best to a jerk outwards on the shaft with only a very light levering against the casing.
Regardless the wheel, when you’ll move swingarm back, driveshaft will stay on the gearbox shaft. So later you’ll have a bit of hit and miss job when putting things together. On one hand, it would be easier to have bevel separated; then you put shaft on the front, then put swingarm over it as a sleeve, then you play with not-so-straightforward rear part of the driveshaft. To avoid multiplying threads. Can anybody tell me what is the thickness of “S” washer. I personally never - NEVER - seen that thing, but 30 years into small block, I thought, “why not” and want to put things right. As I decided to do splines/swingarm bearings/u-joint inspection today, I got the chance to rectify that issue:)
Interesting. I’m pretty certain I didn’t have that washer either, because I remember turning a spare washer on the lathe to fit. I thought it was just to act as a spacer/shim and take up some slack while still being free enough to not cause any obstruction. Might have been 2-3mm. It was the inner diameter I had to turn on the lathe.
