Is there a set procedure (rpm/miles) for running-in a V100S? I can’t find any details in the owner’s manual
Use + Maintenance Book page 55, the paper one that came with my Mandello S, says the following, or something like it :-
- Running in Running in is essential to ensure the durability of the vehicle. During the first 1500 Km (932 mi), observe the following rules to ensure the reliability and performance of the vehicle throughout its lifetime:
- Avoid full throttle starts and hard acceleration;
- Avoid exceeding 4,500 rpm;
- Avoid hard or prolonged braking;
- Do not ride for prolonged periods at sustained high speed; preferably ride the motorcycle on varied routes with frequent, gentle acceleration and deceler- ation;
- Ride prudently to gradually gain familiarity with the motorcycle, testing pro- gressively higher throttle apertures only as you gain confidence
CAUTION
THE FULL PERFORMANCE OF THE VEHICLE IS ONLY AVAILABLE AFTER THE SERVICE AT THE END OF THE RUNNING IN PERIOD.
Many thanks- much appreciated.
Not a problem. Enjoy the process; I love running in a new machine or engine rebuild. I think it helps build machine sympathy. I found on my Mandello I could feel the engine loosening up as I took it through the performance envelope, combinations of throttle and rpm. It just got smoother. I actually continued the gradual increase from 4500 for a couple of hundred miles after the official period, and could feel the roughness melting away.
People will tell you modern machines don’t need running in. But I could feel the engine smoothing out on my R1200RS, too, as it was doing its running in.
As I say, enjoy.
What does this actually mean? That you can use the full performance after the service or is the bike restricted in anyway until the first service is carried out?
Paul
No, there’s no actual restriction. It’s just the translation from Italian meaning you shouldn’t give it the full beans until they’ve changed the oil and put a full-size filter on.
Ah thanks for that Andy, I was getting all excited thinking there was more power
