Service cost

Hi I bought my V85TT last August and have just booked it in for the 24000mile service at a cost of £500 +vat from a Moto Guzzi main dealer. I’ve used them before to sort out the rear brake and they know what they are doing.

Is this a reasonable price ?

Are you sure that’s the right question?

You say you used them before, to sort out a extremely critical bit of functionality and “they know what they are doing”. Pay them if they are worth it!.

Edit: Also, recommend you use the search function ( :magnifying_glass_tilted_left: ) and see what others have had to say about “service cost” (bear in mind inflation, where comments are 2-3 years old).

Depends on what the schedule is for that mileage? If they are going to change the brake fluid, gearbox and drive shaft oil along with everything else on the 6000 mile schedule then that doesn’t sound unreasonable given the time required.

They said it was a big one and they want it for 6 hour’s

I’m happy to pay, just checking how it stacks up compared with people’s experiences.

At the end of the day you may like to factor in the sheer hassle of simple DIY jobs going up the spout ! So sometimes it saves all of the faff by getting a garage to do the spanner work .

I’ve recently replaced the clutch fluid and what a pain that was…in terms of time, bleed nipples seized up and amounts of general cussing involved.

However, once done it did give me an odd sense of achievement i.e. old fart 1, bike 0

Either way it’s all good

The TT85 Big service is at 18000 miles. Normal 6000 mile service is engine oil and filter, air filter, valve clearance and general checks. The TT85 has a cable clutch so no fluid. Personally I would do final drive oil every service and clean out the brakes, new fluid when I replace pads.

Ask them for a breakdown of the price. Likely you’ll be able to judge for yourself then if it’s worth it but feel free to paste the job list on here for a second opinion.

Initial thoughts- if it’s six hours work (car maintenance dealers are around the £130/hr figure, some bike dealers aren’t that far behind now) and parts for £500, maybe not bad. If it’s two hours work and just oil, seems very expensive.

You/we need detail.

the 18k service is usually the bigger one

Why not do it yourself. These bikes are very easy to self service. Get a manual and parts from Gutsibits. Save yourself a few hundred quid.

If it is 6–7 hrs work at £70-£80 per hour for a mechanics time inc property costs, tools. equipment, depreciation and parts I think it is a good price.

As others have said you could (probably) do much of it yourself. Also are they going to change hydraulic fluid and fork oil and regrease head bearings? Those will need doing by 24k but may have been done at 18k or as an “ever two years” item

I paid around that for the big service on the V85 last year. Tbh for a major service it’s the average. My mate is in for 600 for his Suzuki 800 V Strom major service this week. Oil change and filter on my KTM390 was 200 a few months back. Time to reacquaint myself with spanners
