Side Panel Grommets

Hi all.
Have a Cali Special 2000 plate. The side panel retaining grommets have perished. Unable to find correct ones. Anyone had this problem, if so how did you fix the problem? Or any tips on a workaround.
Thanks
Russ

You have part number for correct item? And tried that at (eg) Gutsibits? Tell us what you tried so we don’t bore you telling you to try that!

Yes. Tried Gutsibits. No luck. Don’t think the part is produced anymore. Just wondered if anyone has any better ideas than me just trying to glue random rubber washers and the like to see if that works.

Can you not squeeze a normal open electrical rubber grommet into the hole?

If you want an original, is it part 29 in this image?

Hi
Tried a couple of sizes but didn’t work. Tried to make my own from a blind grommet, but the loctite epoxy was rubbish. Will try again with araldite. This would be a temporary fix though as it’s the fuse box side and that is the most removed side.
Found them on the BCI site, but unable to order as unable to type in any details. Not sure why. Will keep trying.
Thanks for the advice and the link to the parts catalog.

Also available here if you have any more success in ordering

I’ve tried all ways of trying to put the panel on. Araldited the grommet. Made the hole the right size. To no avail. Just will not push on. Working blind doesn’t help. No way of seeing what’s happening. This seems symptomatic with this Guzzi. Parts are bloody hard to get. Seems every variant has different fittings etc. This is my first bike, fell in love when first saw it. Now I’ve just about reached the end with it. Something as simple as a side panel becomes a major issue and prevents me from riding it. Shame but my love for it has now gone.
Japanese may not have the soul but at least I can get parts and ride the thing.
Thanks for you help.

Little problems like this can be demoralising for sure, and sometimes take the joy out of riding, it’s true.

Stick at it, Russ - you’ll find a solution, and maybe help others with a similar problem. For my part, I’m wondering if another ‘grommet’ from say, a T3 side panel, might be made to work. Cheap experiment - and a garage who works with wiring/rewiring surely has a ton of these in various dimensions. Not an adhesive expert, but I’m think that araldite might be too ‘hard’ when set - in this context you maybe need something with ‘flex’?

Now you know the part number, a wider search might just yield results, too.

And just musing here, but I wonder if something might be done with that Sugru (?) stuff? It’s mouldable, like plasticine, but sets solid, yet flexible… maybe?

I’ve been thinking about some sort of flexible rubber or silicon while out and about. I’ll look up what you suggested.
Sorry. Was just venting my annoyance. It helps clear my mind for fresh ideas :joy:

It’s fine Russ. Some bits for some of the bikes are hard to find, but generally, as spares go, we do OK (for old bikes). And where the bit you want is unobtainium, there is often a solution. Good luck!

If you were going to use Sugru on the side panel as a grommet how would you go about it?

It’s a moldable putty which sets firm, yet with some elasticity, so… dunno mate. Beer, some unsuitable tools, and a good sense of humour. Me, I’d find a wiring grommet that works.

Edit. You got one on the other panel, right? Copy that (he said, cheerfully).

A former member has emailed me to say that these parts are available from Harglo Performance in Wales - he sent me the enclosed image for information.

Hi all.
Countless hours trying to get the side panel 3 studs to go through 3 holes, on the fuse box side. I’ve not been able to ride it all through the good weather as the panel will just not go on. You wouldn’t think it would be that hard. I’ve found some grommets that fit, I’ve tried Sugru. It just WILL NOT go on. Whether something is holding it off somewhere or it doesn’t line up I don’t know as you’re working blind. 3 studs, 3 holes has done me. I’ve no idea what to do now. The other side pops off and pops back on again. Simple.

Maybe try putting some plasticine where the the gromets fit and see exactly where the pins on the back of the side panel are lining up? Maybe one of the brackets that hold the gromets is slightly out of place and so the pins on the panel do not align.

Either that or put a paint spot on the pins and masking tape over the gromet holes and again check the alignment. You might not even need the paint if the pins are pointed.

Final solution, use tie wraps to hold the side panel on (or leave it off) and just go for a ride before the autumn gales kick in!

Great advice. Will give it a go. Get so wrapped up in ‘it came off so it should go back on, can’t understand it’ mentality that your advice didn’t enter my head.
Didn’t want to ride without as it’s the fuse and relay side and didn’t want expose to dust, rain etc. Electrical problems I don’t need😁
Thanks again for your advice. If you suddenly see lots of smiley emojis you’ll know why.
Happy biking
Russ

Will these work? from REVITE +44 (0)1869 252520 only problem is quantity - I could do with 2 and 2 spare ones for a 2011 V7

Mark, from the parts list above, the ones Russ needs are oval.
