Suspension set up

Hi,

Awaiting delivery of my V85TT. Does anyone know if there are any settings for preload and rebound for front and rear suspension?

I’m thinking starter setups based on rider weight and not just rider, rider + luggage, rider + pillion etc.

Any help/advice appreciated.

Cheers

there’s nothing about rider weight in the handbook, but as a rough guide I use step 3 or 4 on the shock and unscrew damping 1.5 full turns from clockwise for mixed riding me on my own and me plus pillion. top box always fitted.

I’m approx 81kg

occasionally I’ve tried 2 turns out on damping and even fully out, but as a starting point you need to ride around with factory recommended settings until you’re very used to how it feels and then adjust.

fully loaded with panniers, pillion, and stuff strapped to panniers on top of that I use step 6 or 7 on the shock and damping at half a turn.

My measurement show the rear spring to be about the right spring rate for me (I am 101Kg in riding gear) but with insufficient preload to support the weight of bike and rider in the right place of the suspension movement.

So unless you have the spring preload set high you will spend much of the time on the bump stop where it feels very stiff and harsh (of course)

I’m trying to make some adjustment first of all changing the preload for static sag front and back. I’m 90kg in riding kit and don’t take a pillion. Any suggestions for a starting point with the damping adjustments?

I would start with second notch on the shock and wind the bottom screw fully in, then 1 full turn out anti clockwise, should be fairly close.

I have hardly touched the front, only half a turn from standard and I’ve not experimented with changing front apart from that, I’ve changed the rear quite often depending on pillion or luggage etc.

you’re about 10kg heavier than me so you may want notch 3 but it does affect seat height so I would start with 2

I had everything on minimum if solo, and gradually increased pre load with a pillion and/or luggage, after 22,000 miles was still impressed with original shock

Is there a standard suspension set up as I can’t find anything in the manual which suggests settings?

yes, there is a standard set up.

Thanks for finding that, for some reason I haven’t got that in my manual (handbook), it’s very short on information? Do those adjustments apply to the front suspension?

there’s another page for front, but i don’t have a screen shot, it gives the same setting for all situations anyway, I think from memory it was one turn out anti clockwise from fully clockwise but I will try and get you a screenshot later and add it to this post
