T3 California Gear box.

I need an end cover, preferably with clutch lever for my T3 California rebuild. Mine has a broken and bodged lever support casting.

Cheers John.

Hi John
Gutsibits or Reboot are worth a try or there is one on eBay

Hi Don? I’ve seen several that have the same or worse damage to the casting around the large bearing. How significant would this be to oil retention?. My cover has a cast tube attached for the engine support. I’m not sure if this is detachable? (this one doesn’t)
I am not exactly flush with money and am still, I suppose, looking for a bargain!
I am not sure there is such a thing though!
Cheers John.

No it’s the main case that has the support? (Just went and looked at photos to make sure.)

It does look like that gearbox has had a bit of a disaster in the past, but I doubt that would cause a leak. Gutsibits (They want £180 for one) or Reboot would be the other places to try for one.
As Mike says, the cross tube is on the main gearbox casting, not the end cover, unless yours is a very early model that might have included a cross over shaft for right foot gear change.
This is the gearbox on my 1978 Spada. The bit at the bottom is part of the gearbox casting, not the end cover.
Gearbox end

How the hell do you post a photograph on here?
Why is there no drag and drop function for us without the knowledge?

Done it I think! This is mine.

I would say that is an early model where the cross shaft is for a right foot gear shift.

Thanks Don, at least I know I am not going mad.

The question is, can I replace this cover with one that doesn’t have the cross shaft?

The gear shift is on the left . The bike is registered as a 1979 bike and was registered here in 2015

As far as I am aware the cross shaft casting on the underside of the gearbox was not used to swap the sides of the foot controls as on my 850T I have the extra hole below the gearbox but it is not used. The shafts that swap the controls sit in plates that are fixed between the foot peg carriers and the frame. The gear change sits in cups each end and the rear brake shaft passes through these plates and the pedal and a clamp fit on splines to the ends. Nothing goes through the extra hole cast under the gearbox.

You can just make out the lower shaft on the second photo behind the lower gear change rose but nothing passes through it.

I think it is a casting carried on from an earlier model just like the supports for the dynamo between the cylinders that are on my crankcase.

This does not have any connection to the cover and is part of the gearbox casting.

The fin plates on the lower frame rails have two bolt holes, the front one for the long bolt (19) that passes through the upper of the two gearbox galleries and the rear ones for the main stand pivot bolts (28). Between these holes is a cut out semi circular hole that aligns with the lower gallery through the gearbox casing. Plate (47) which carries the gearchange and rear brake shafts is separate from this and does not align. I assume the lower gallery is for a model prior to 1974.

Gear change

Hi Chris, thank you. Your knowledge is much appreciated.
The question now is, can I replace the cover with a later one without the additional casting?
And I suppose, if the cover is different are the gearbox internals different too, should I need to replace seals and bearings etc.?
Cheers John.

As far as I am aware the gearbox cover should be the same, but better ask a gearbox expert, maybe try calling Nigel at NBS?

I have looked through Guzziology and cannot find any major differences between 5 speed gearboxes of the 1970s and 80s.

Why not get a later gasket and try it on your gearbox before you buy a cover? That will confirm the fit and bolts but not any internal differences. Better move, call Nigel click here

I phoned Nigel at NBS. He replaced the engine on this bike. He said there was no problem in fitting a later cover. I forgot to ask if there is any difference to the gearbox itself. Anybody?

I also checked the history I was given from the seller after I had bought the bike and he had found it.
The bike came from Belgium in 2015 and was registered as a 1979 model. I have nothing previous to this. I do have an address if I can decipher the hand writing.

Maybe call Nigel back?
