Hi I have a 1976 T3, I have rebuilt the engine using used steel barrels not chrome, used pistons new rings, rings were installed right way up, have done about 2000 miles 20w50 motul oil, changed at about 700 miles, ran in using no more than 4000 revs, compression test after 100 miles was 125 each side, after 2000 miles 140 left 170 right, pretty certain no oil smoke initially, but I have oil smoke fro left cylinder when revving and using oil approx 1litre per 1000 miles. Any ideas? Glazed bores?
There are two things I can think of that may be causing your problem, when you fitted new rings did you fit the correct rings for steel barrels, they are different from chrome barrel ring.
The other thing, it is possible to fit the head gasket the wrong way round, this blocks the oil drain hole and the rocker casing stars to fill up until it drains down the pushrod tubes and the valve guides. If this is the problem be prepared for a torrent of oil draining onto your shoe.
And yes I did do this once and never stopped kicking myself,
