T3 Sparking

Hi - my '76 T3 has started producing quite impressive sparks from the starter motor - starts ok but not ideal. I’ll try replacing the relay, but is this a common thing?

Where are the sparks coming from? Is the casing wet or oily?

Seem to be from the back of the starter - not wet or oily - tried shielding connections in rubber tape but didn’t make much difference

Are the cables unfrayed? By that I mean are there any strands hanging off the cables where they are coming apart.
Are the cable nuts tight and the threaded posts coming out of the starter solenoid fixed tight and not wobbly?

The back of the starter motor has a spun metal cap are the sparks coming from that or where the feed from the solenoid goes into the starter?

Sorry so many questions, a phot might help.

Sorry for the delay - I got locked out of the forum - anyhow, here is a pic of the offending ( sparking) part… you can see the temporary insulation attempts!

Its probably the Braided Wire that goes between the solenoid and the Brushes. Where it passes through the tin metal housing there is a rubber grommet that has maybe perished and the wire is touching it!

If you decide to strip it down to repair it, there is a good guide on the This old tractor website (assuming it is a Bosch starter)

Thanks for all the responses - I think I have narrowed it down to the small wire at the back which has a spade connector - bit of tape on this. and it seems to have stopped it - so will replace that wire.
