Town riding advice please.

Hi all. I’m just getting used to my V7 and it’s been quite a few years since I had a V twin. It seems a bit lumpy around town. I suspect I’m keeping it in too high a gear and should really stay in the first 3 gears. Any thoughts and advice very welcome. Cheers.

Firstly… stop looking at yerself in shop windows…
My older V7 can be lumpy when not really warm, I usually keep the ‘choke’ on a little, I find it prevents the low-rev stalling and eases things if simply popping into town or on other short journeys where the engine isn’t thoroughly warmed.
Also as you say, trying to ride it like a big multi, chugging along at low revs in gears higher than 2 or 3 is not its forte.
Knocking it down and using the engine to both drive and brake works for me.
My little 650 Vstrom is similarly lumpy if ridden in the same way, whereas my old VFR would happily pull smoothly from much lower revs.
Horses for courses eh.

:joy::joy: have you been following me? We all sneak a peak when we can. Thanks for the advice too. Mines not a cold bike issue more of me choosing the wrong gears as I suspected. I shall have a word with myself and make sure I pay more attention when pootling along. Still love the bike though. I will post later on what did I do with my Guzzi about my new levers.:motorcycle::motorcycle:cheers again.

Keep to the lower gears and at 30mph you don’t want to be any higher than 4th. The v-twin is very torquey but as with all twins they are lumpy if too high a gear is used at too low a speed. Adapt your style an enjoy!

One thing I’d add is.. be friendly with your back brake.
At low speeds, dragging or braking only with the rear stops the potential pogo effect, especially useful if riding with a pillion as it helps prevent the helmet to helmet Glasgow Kiss :kiss_mark:

Haha thanks both. She stopped getting on the back of my bikes as soon as we got engaged! I’ve been out on it today and getting used to a v twin again thanks. Low gears it is :+1::+1:
