V100 Mandello ran out of fuel: display said 134ml

Just coming up for my first service on the V100 Mandello - beautiful machine and a pleasure to ride… until it came to a halt half a mile from a petrol station (which was lucky). The fuel gauge showed just over half a tank left and 134mls to run, but it took a full tank capacity when I wheeled it to the pump! Hopefully the service team will sort this next week, but I suspect it will require a separate appointment at the garage - anyone else had this?

First time I’ve heard of this one! Bet that was longest 1/2 mile of yr life!

On another FB page, I invited people to remember how, back in the old days, you would be riding along, not a care in the world, when the engine coughed.

No problem, we said…confidently switching to reserve…

Only to find we were already on it.

Are you sure it means 134 miles left? On mine (V7 850 E5) the counter is how many miles you’ve done since low fuel light came on, so it’s up to you how many more miles you think you can go. It doesn’t try to calculate it for you.

However the gauge still showing over half is useless! :astonished:

There’s still the old fashioned method, using the trip mileometer.

Have to say on the V7 850 all the mpg calculations look like nonsense. The only really useful displays I use are clock, trip, odo and external temp.

On the V7 850 the low fuel light starts flickering at a gnat’s under 3 gallons (UK), then I know I have 1.5 gallons left, then it’s up to me how far I think I can get on that.

Or, what I had once - turned onto reserve and nothing happened. Still no good. The plastic reserve tubes in both taps had shrunk so were letting all the fuel through at the bottom.

Once the bike was rolling it was actually quite easy - glad it was not up a steep slope though!

Hmm - I don’t think so - it always shows a positive number when the tank is full then the number goes down as I ride, never indicating I am low and on reserve… just stops going down further… but as noted, the gauge is showing over half a tank still. I had a logarithmic fuel gauge on my Honda CBF previously so am normally using the trip meter, but for some reason had flipped it onto odometer and left it there (probably as I am working up to the required miles for my first service. I won’t get caught out like that again!

OK I get it - well, it’s not right!

Yes mine goes into panic mode too…
I am now getting between 60 and 73 mpg,so I know I can do 240 and still have at least 30 still in the tank.

The top right figure next to the fuel pump display, reads mileage you can expect from fuel on board. once reserve is hit then calculation moves to left side of screen and adjusts acording to how you are now using the bike will let you know how far in miles you can get… Had issue on way to Donnington on M 42
reading 80 miles left , enough to get to Ashby as I thought, then noticed it change and telling me six miles left. Luckily I was by J6 and able to pull off at NEC and fuel up. Took a full tank.
This seems to have self corrected on subsequent refuels. That is the only time it has glitched in 5000 miles.

Yes that the problem with these modern systems… glitchy! I spoke with the garage and they acknowledged they have seen this issue before and will start the warranty process for a replacement sensor. Keeping an eye on the miles traveled is the only sure way of avoiding annoyance!
