V100S preload query

I’m heading off on a tour, so wanted to adjust the preload for the extra weight I’ll be carrying and found the preload doesn’t actually adjust as much as the owners manual recommends.

The owners manual recommended preload settings for the V100S are

  • 4 full turns (from fully open) for rider only,
  • 12 turns for rider plus panniers and
  • 16 turns for rider, pillion and luggage.

I’ve just noticed that my preload knob only has 14.5 turns from fully open to fully closed, so it won’t actually do the 16 turns the manual recommends for a fully laden bike.

Are all V100S models the same or is it just mine?

Does it mean full turns of “Clicks” - most shock have pre-set clicks as you turn the adjuster and each click is what you count. Certainly that’s the case on my Mandello - albeit not the S model.

Yes Paul, full turns. When the suspension is cold the Ohlins damper knob has fewer turns than the manual says it should have. For some odd reason when I dismount after a ride and the suspension is ‘warm’, the knob releases more than when cold, but they don’t feel like ‘clicks’ when the suspension is cold.

Sorry just to be clear, when cold I get a subtle click on each turn. When warm there are a few extra turns (anti-clockwise beyond the first click) but these extra turns don’t click. It’s a bit odd to my mind.

Yes, agreed - no idea. On my non-Ohlins shock and every other one I’ve had on other bikes you get a definite “Click” and usually several clicks per full rotation of the adjuster. Sorry I can’t help any more.
