V50 Charging.

Had a first proper run on my rebuilt V5011, ran fine for 25ish miles then went onto one cylinder, managed to get home on remaining cylinder. Took the generator and the rotor off had a play about got it working again, this was running without the generator or rotor back on, I put everything back together, I now have the charge light on all the time so I may have damaged something in the process with running without the generator and rotor in place, does anybody with more electrical knowledge know what I could of damaged before I spend even more money than I have already on any replacement parts I may require. Grateful of any advise.

As you have run it without the generator or rotor in place (dissasembled it) - are you sure you have connected the blue and purple wires to the correct pins on the front of the generator.

Blue - marked as Y on Stator - goes to rectifier
Purple - marked as DF on stator - goes to regulator

seems the most likely

I think I have connected the correct wires as I took a photo before disassembled and checked a wiring diagram, so must be something else, thanks for the reply.

Check the connections to the regulator and rectifier would be my next move.

have a look at this

If you would like an A3 coloured wiring diagram I have drawn one for your model see here

Best wishes Chris

I did once have a charge light stuck on (was R-series BMW, but same Bosch system) it was a jammed brush, not pressing on slip ring properly. Sorted by scraping off the rough bits with a knife.

Another time, on the LM, light was occasionally showing and Voltage dropping (it had LM2 dash with Voltmeter), rotor winding was failing, going high resistance.

Another good guide to fault finding the charging system can be found here

I have charging working on the V50, I purchased a modern all in one regulator/rectifier from ebay £40 looked just the same as the ones for £140, at first I didn’t think it was working because the generator light stayed on but after a little investigating it doesn’t work with the gen light as its wired differently, I have fitted a volt meter that I had laying about to prove that it is charging.

Sounds like a good job. What have you used for feeding power to the rotor windings?

It comes fully wired, the three yellows to the stator two wires either side of the brush holder, you don’t use the third wire to the stator, +and - to the battery and a orange wire to the ignition switch, all these wires come from the new regulator/rectify.

Sounds good. Do you have any more details of the unit you fitted?

Hopefully this is a link to the rectifier I purchased Voltage Regulator Rectifier Fits For BMW R100 R90 R80 R65 R60 Guzzi V35 V50 V65 | eBay
