V7 starter issue - differ from posts?

Posted originally as a reply but thought it may be more suitable as new post,as it may be a different issue.
Morning all
Would this be the same fix for; Ignition light come on then when I press the start button just a click and all lights go off?
Bike is 2022 V7 special, had a few months now with no starter issue at all. Washed the bike last night, went to start and the above happened. Checked if water had got into fuses etc. Left it 15 minutes and it started But this morning same issue (didnt have time to wait as I had to get to work - so in the car :frowning: )
Regards
Jim

As my other reply, I’m going to bet on bad connector contact(s), water ingress causing corrosion to the contacts.

As with all of my bikes since forever, I do a light spray of WD40 on all the electrics I can get at, fairly often (but not very often). I also put ACF50 on the shiny bits. If I do wash it it’s bucket of warm water and car shampoo and a wash mitt. Much more complicated than that and my attention span starts wandering. :grinning:

Morning all. When I bought my new to me 2022 V7 850 Special I was aware of some issues with the starter button/water issues. I am an avid detailer and enjoy cleaning the bike (an illness….i know) and only once did it fail to start. The solution was a quick spray of contact cleaner in behind the starter button without disassembling the whole housing and it worked straight away. I now am very careful on not soaking the handlebar area but still give the rest of the bike a thorough clean and have had no repeat problems. I bought the WD40 contact cleaner.

It could be the starter button is sticking, plastic against plastic with a metal tang that moves to make contact. A little bit of debris can cause the button to stop short of making clean contact. If the bike gets wet, spray some WD40 on the switch gear to disperse the water.

But we’ve never heard of all lights going out before, or I haven’t, so not sure what’s going on in this case. Before, it was button contacts not quite making because spring is too long and stopping them touching.
This almost sounds like bad battery connection so that when starter is supposed to run, everything dies because of resistance. Just guessing!

Apprciate all the responses, thank you.
Turns oput there were two issues. Sorted the one you have all mentioned by circuit cleaner then UB40  The second issue and thereason the ignition lights were going out was down to me being a muppet. I had wired a USB charger to my battery and hadnt tightened the Pos and Neg screws back properly. Issues resolved.
Thanks once again.

So I guessed right about dodgy battery connection! So glad it was simple.

Yes you did mention it Mike_H and thank you. :+1:

It’s all good info because for others reading this it’s a possible symptom with specific behaviour, and a cause. :+1: :grinning:
