Reading a topic on the Wildguzzi site about a Cali vintage with a shaft noise and clicking whilst hot after a long run.
I was interested to see if mine was doing the same.
With the bike on the centre from cold rotate the rear wheel in the normal direction, smooth with no noise.
Take the bike for say a 20 mile run, put in on the centre stand rotate the wheel and there is some slight resistance at about every 90 degrees of the turn and a clicking sound, some have suggested it’s the Uj joint rubbing on the inside of the s/arm tunnel because the rear suspension is at full stretch whilst on the centre stand and the shaft is not happy being out of alignment, But why only when its hot.
Whilst riding the bike all is well, No noise, No vibration, If I get off and push the bike along whilst it’s still hot, Nothing?.
Am I being over cautious,
Is anyone else aware of this problem(If it is a problem?)
Well we all ride in the knowledge that if the anything out back in the drive line seizes at speed we’re probably toast, but beyond that I shouldn’t worry.
But more seriously. With it up on the stand jack up via the swing arm to get better alignment and then retry.
I assume you are joking.
I have had my bevel box on my LMIII go 1 day out of warranty at 130mph.
It didn’t seize though so I carried on.
I have a friend who coming back from Scotland thought his rear end needed investigating, when we did the uj bearing fell out in half a dozen pieces but it had been fine the previous weekend at over 100 mph on the M75, M6 ,M42 and M40. And then commuting to work for a week over 20 miles each way.
I have another friend whose chain on his Ducati 900SS split at speed, wrapped itself round his rear wheel locking it solid.
The subsequent rapid slowing down caused his rear tyre to wear through almost to the canvas.
The bike needed recovery.
Guzzi’s are far better.
Problem now solved.
Removed panniers, took the bike on a 20mile run to get it warmed up. On return the rear shocks were removed and a jack placed under the swinging arm, whilst I spun the wheel slowly a friend worked the jack.
Within about to 3 to 4mm of upward movement the noise stopped and all was smooth, the shaft/UJ was not happy at full stretch hence the noise, much to my relief. “Happy days”
Looking pictures on the web, looks like it’s a Tonti frame. Implies UJ is rubbing on the inside of its tunnel at that position, not ideal really. Are the shocks maybe a bit too long?
