I am a little confused as to what carbs my 1979 V50 should have. Mine has Dellorto PHBL24 carbs. The reason I want to know this is because I want to put straight intakes on the carb as I am not running an airbox. If anyone knows where I can get such a thing I would be grateful. Thanks.
can’t tell you what you should have (Google surely can!) but i can you point you at Eurocarb as a source for Dellorto spares and related info
According to Mick Falloon’s wonderful book “The Moto Guzzi Story” the V50 (and the V50II and V50III) 1977-86 had VHB24F carbs. The 1979-84 V50 Monza had PHBH28B carbs. The 1984-89 V50 Monza II had PHBH30 carbs. I can find no reference to PHBL24 carbs although this does not mean that they were not fitted at the factory, that has a reputation of fitting different components now and again, especially towards the end of a production run.
Very interesting…I have contacted Eurocarb and this is the email I got back from them…
"1976 V50 - pair of VHBZ24 carbs
1980 V50 III with a pair of PHBH28 carbs.
None with PHBL carbs, but I don’t see any reason why the PHBL24 could not be used to replace the VHBZ24 carbs as long as they are jetted correctly".
Presumably the Monza carbs cannot be fitted can they, it would be a nice upgrade perhaps? I wonder what the PHBL24’s were originally fitted to if not installed at the factory given the short run of the Mk2. They may have been swapped in by a previous owner and I have no idea if they are jetted correctly, but I intend to dismantle and clean and hopefully there will be markings on the jets to identify them.
Just to reiterate what has already been said. According to Guzzi Workshop manuals and Guzziology the V50 I/II use VHB24F carbs. The V50 III and Monza PHBH28B. The Monza II ans all 650s and 750s use PHBH30 carbs
The basic difference between a PHBL and a PHBH is the L goes from 20-26mm and the H goes from 26-30mm.
Thanks for that clarification about the difference being essentially inlet size. There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of information and spare parts for the PHBL from what I can find up to now. Is it possible to use bigger carbs with a suitably adapted intake manifold on the Mk2? Thanks.
Just to give you idea, in PHBH P stands for pistone - that means, round slide, while in VHB - V means valve and refers to flat slide. I got one PH-whatever 26, which I am pretty sure was used in either V50III or V35III, but I don’t say I know better than books .
