What's going on at Footman James?

I’ve just had my multi bike insurance quote renewal from FJ and it’s shot up from £360 to £640 for the same cover! They no longer offer breakdown, legal etc as standard and you have to add them on to the basic policy, plus the handling fee has gone up.
Despite being with them for over ten years, this has made me shop around and for a better cover: with breakdown, legal cover, unlimited mileage and zero excess Carole Nash quote £308; a no brainer! And that’s with the same underwriter.
Perhaps FJ don’t want to insure classics anymore? Shame because they have always been good to deal with.

I’m with Footman James with one of their Flex policies that covers my 6 old bikes and my 17 year old car. My renewal was £500 for all those. I opted out of all the unnecessary add on ages ago as I have my own AA policy and find them to be very good on the few occasions I have needed them.
Your quote from them does seem to be a bit excessive.

If you got a ‘good’ price from Carole Nash, don’t forget to try Mackenzie Hodgson too.
They’re actually the same company and offer the same Breakdown/Euro cover, but I’ve always found them cheaper than CNash.

My FJ renewal went from around 600 quid to over 1200, which was a bit more than I expected. I had added my 24 yo daughter and a KTM 390 Duke to the policy, (flex, she was only insured on the Duke, I was insured on that, my Le Mans, and my GS1250) so an increase was to be expected, but 100%???

So I talk to them, and ask, “what if I take my daughter off the policy?”

900 quid.

“So if I cancel the Duke as well?”

600 quid.

Anyone interested in a lovely KTM 390 Duke, low mileage, new tyres, recent service, it’ll be up for sale over the weekend. Cracking bike, great to ride, though the saddle’s a bit hard. Down in Kent.

I’m with Carole Nash. They’re quite easy to deal with - you get through to a call centre in Stockport - and they do include European breakdown cover. I had occasion to use it once in France. Very good. I’d have been stuffed without it.

If the renewal quote seems too high, I just ring them up and negotiate a lower fee. They’re pretty helpful that way.

I called FJ to find out why the premium had shot up so much and it seems that ‘following a recent review’ they no longer offered Breakdown / Legal Protection/Agreed Value/Ride to Work as part of the package, instead offering them as extras. They also changed me from a classic bike policy to a multi vehicle policy despite all my bike being classics. They made no effort to persuade me to stay so I’ve gone with Carole Nash who have a brilliant classics agent on the end of the phone.

FJ went from 650 to 4500 for two MG and a Kawasaki, needless to say I moved. Beware Carol Nash, their legal people screwed up two no fault accidents, I managed to sort them myself in the end but wouldn’t use them again.
