As this is my first post here… hello, and thanks for having me.
I have a new bike coming soon - a 2024 V7 Special Edition.
I’m keen to have the security arranged from day one and my first question is does anyone know what size disc lock fits the front brake disc? I have one with a 6mm pin but that will still be in use on another bike most of the time so I think I need a new one for when out and about.
Any recommendations as to what fits with minimum gaps would be much appreciated.
I have a ground anchor and chunky chain at home.
I have the same bike and use this lock. Easy enough to fit and is a good visual deterrent. Don’t forget your curly yellow lead as the disc is on the left and when the steering lock is on it’s hard to see. Only had mine a month or so but love it. This forum and club is great as well.
Thanks. This looks like the Kovix I was just looking at. Good to know it fits, I always thought the 6mm abus I have on the 125 seems a bit lightweight for a more expensive bike.
I see there are brackets for the Kovix locks which clamp around a round tube - I imagine they would fit this version too as it looks identical.
Glad to hear you’re enjoying your bike. I can’t wait!
I only use it as a secondary lock when I’m out. I have an abus which is wrapped around the rear wheel. We do what we can . Loads of good tips on the forum about the V7 850 electronics and settings etc. have fun.
Been looking at that one too. As you say, it costs a chunk but then again it’ll last a lifetime and in the scheme of things is a fraction of the cost of a new bike.
Just my point of view - having trashed a disc by trying to drive off with a disc lock on, I won’t use them now - yes it had a bright yellow curly ‘reminder’ - I was still oblivious - only needs a distraction or departure from normal routine - i.e. like being parked away from home (I was on a camp site and had totally forgot I put it on, as I wouldn’t normally on camp sites). I now use an armoured cable lock, which has some give in it if forgotten to be removed. I was fortunate that I only bent the disc, other people had done more damage or even fallen off the bike.
I did a quick search on disc locks on the forum and found a few posts about setting off with the lock still in place. For me I’ve always used one so it’s etched in my mind to fit and remove it every time (hopefully it stays that way).
A good argument for the alarmed disc lock is that it will go off as soon as you lift the bike off the side stand. 100db alarm is a good reminder not to pull away just yet.
Re the key reminder…
If you add a piece of fuel pipe to your keys, then alternate which key it’s pushed onto moving as you need each.
You move it from the bike key, and slip it onto the disk lock key when riding, then move it back onto the bike key when parked… it adds a simple low-cost reminder.
As it’s rubber it also prevents the keys rubbing against the paintwork
I tend to pick a lock that has a Sold Secure rating and one that as well as fitting around the disc is a more traditional padlock design so it works with my chain when at home.
