Please could some kind soul advise on the following? My wife recently bought a 2009 Norge. Lovely machine in so many ways but some electrical issues.
Indicators and hazards packed in. No flasher relay.
The mode button now doesn’t seem to do anything either.
Fuses fine, bulbs and contacts all clean. There seems to be no flasher relay. Am I right in thinking it all works via the ECU? The general online advice seems to be that failure of the ECU is unlikely and the cause may well be dirty or corroded wiring connectors or a poor earth.
I’ve had every connector I can reasonably access apart and cleaned and reassembled but no change. Still no flashers, hazards or mode.
The only connectors I havent tried to pull apart are the big ones on the front of the ECU but, like the unit itself, they are incredibly inaccessible. Removal of the ECU seems to be almost impossible as either frame tubes or the alternator are in the way.
I can see an earth wire attached to the bottom of the ECU but no way can I get to it to dismantle and clean.
Has anyone else had this trouble and how did they get around it?
From memory the connectors have a small tab that you push to swing the connector off, then remove the ecu by pulling it up out of the slot it’s housed in to gain access to the earth wire at the bottom. Good luck but it is horribly tight, it’s like doing it through the letter box!
The indicators work through the dash not the ECU. If it’s the switch that’s faulty which it sounds like it could be I think I have a Breva one that might be the same
Thanks for the update, Ian- and for the offer of the Brevia switch- I may well end up taking you up on this.
“Blue” connector to the ECU accessed and disconnected and reassembled with extreme difficulty. The connections all seemed immaculate and I regret disturbing them. The other- RH- side connector is so deeply buried behind stiff and unyielding wiring and brake lines that I really don’t wish to disturb it. Red warning ! triangle on dashboard lights up now.
ECU seems to be firmly eathed to the frame.
It would seem like failure of the LH switchgear except that the hazard button doesn’t work and that is on the RH assembly.
Horn and main beam switching all fine but the mode switch doesn’t work at all, so I have no means of entering any codes or setting clock. It worked when we got the bike a couple of months ago.
I will completely strip and clean the LH switchgear now.
Other issues, possibly related:
Clutch switch had broken- maybe oil or WD40 related? the plastic was brittle. I have bought and fitted a new one.
Starter switch doesn’t spring back very well. I will strip and clean.
Even when starter switch pushed back out the starter still runs. I have ordered a new relay.
Ok. LH & RH switchgeat taken to pieces as far as possible. Actual switches seem to be non-dismantleable. They do seem to be immaculate though and I’ve soused them in Halfords electrical cleaner and worked the switches back and forth. No difference- except that I’m reasonably assured the switches seem to be not at fault.
Ordering ODB cable to try to use laptop ECU fault diagnosis.
Oh- the ABS switch on the LH side of the fairing- any idea what the purpose is? It seems to just earth out the ABS system for as long as the button is pressed.
As others have said, the mode switch is a bit naff and has a habit of failing. If you’ve had a good clean in the switchgear, I’d imagine it’s unrelated to the indicator issue. Can you rig up some wires in place of the switch to check what the on-board diagnostic says the codes are? (I think the norge has the same dash as the sport-apologies if this is irrelevant!)
If you’re anywhere near Norfolk I have a spare dash that you can borrow to confirm the fault is in there
Thank you for the offer, Tom- but we’re in East Kent so I will have to decline!
Seems strange that three failure issues (indicators, hazards and mode) all happen at once- they must surely in some way be related?
Indicators failed whilst driving. Then were working again when bike re-started. Lasted a few days then didn’t work when started up after a few days. Hasn’t worked since.
I should add that my wife complained that the speedo didn’t work either on a separate occasion but worked again after stop and re-start. Hasn’t failed since.
I’ll try OBD diagnostics via laptop when cables arrive, if I can manage to download the software.
Otherwise seriously contemplating cutting the whole indicator circuit out and jury-rigging a system with a flasher.
Why, oh why, didn’t Moto Guzzi put the ECU under a removable access panel? it is almost as if they started with the ECU and constructed the entire bike around it!
On my sport the indicators and hazards failed due to a corroded dash, the sealant had begun to degrade and I suspect this allowed water entry/allowed water to stagnate.
If your testing with the obd reveals that the dash itself is at fault, I would recommend Carmo electronics in the Netherlands for repairs.
I managed to get the dash apart to check for corrosion, of which there was quite a bit! Hopefully this isn’t your issue though.
Ok. The OBD cable kit arrived, with drivers / software. I have use of one laptop where I can install software and drivers, and that is my wife’s old one, which has not been used for some time (the one I’m using is my work one, and whilst I’m perfectly ok to use it for non-work things out of hours, I cannot install anything on it).
So- elderly laptop refreshed and seems to work ok. Software & drivers installed. Hooked up to bike (naturally, the garage is out or range of the home hub, but seems to be in range when working in the street).
Please can anyone help? I find the JPDiag website to be impenetrable. Here’s the header page that comes up. I have gone down every option and can get no further. I’ve uploaded the software.
As far as I can tell I have connected the cable to the correct port on the bike, the little power leads are correctly crocodile clipped to the battery and the ignition switch is on, with dashboard lights on.
One of the tabs on the web page is for the JPDiag forum and invites me to register. This is as far as I can get. I presume there should be a menu of possible bike options? I’ve tried putting in VIN number but not, it seems what is required. As it says, if the field below is empty, there is something wrong.
Please could some kind tech-savvy person explain to me- preferably in big, friendly letters in crayon - what this Luddite needs to do to be able to get the laptop to talk to the bike so that I can get some error codes and work out just what is wrong with the wretched thing?
Thank you for your patience and any advice you can give.
I think you could be better off with guzzi diag, jpdiag needs an Internet connection so you can download a registration file. The franglais on the program is interesting as well.
With jpdiag you need to select the com port that you have the obd cable plugged into then click on the “connect” button once you see the basic info from the Ecu displayed.
Use the test button to prove you have a connection to the bike.
The copy button launch a browser to get the licence file.
Sorry, I know nothing about the more modern bikes, mine all have carbs and mybe an aftermarket electronic ignition. I have seen various Guzzi Diagnostic software etc available on the Dutch Guzzi Clubs website, it may help. Use your laptop and the translate function. Scroll down the list on the left hand side to find the Diagnosis software.
