Florida 650 ignition

Ah well, there’s professional and Professional.

Carbs are sorted previous guy was messing with them also full of petrol gell cleaned n reset restrictor lit the funny washers removed boom she is running smooth no smoke r backfires ready for mot can’t wait rare colour it’s like army r na to green any idea where I would get a code for it can not upload photo of her might change tank to fat bob Harleyone lmbo22014-01-15 22:42:17

Well done, glad you got it sorted.

Hi Brian, I don’t know what the condenser does, I have a vague recollection that is was, somehow, an attempt to prevent frequent amplifier failure. However, if you check the wiring diagram you will plainly see it.

The item is displayed, but unavailable, here.

PS: Condenser is just another name for a capacitor so has rather more uses than simply preventing points sparking

I worked and was trained by BBC Engineering so I am well aware of what a condensor/capacitor is. I see it now on the diagram. It’s between the positive the supply to the amps and earth, so is presumably there to remove any spikes in the supply.

That’s feasible, it may prevent a high Voltage spike on the output transistor if no plugs are connected, that could indeed kill it. Assuming there is no built-in protection that is.

Well new problem light switch n on off switch is causing dead short to ignition switch n horn causing back fire when ignition switch turned off on inspection somebody was messing with it to. So ordered new switch gear n ignition switch n keys gussi bits says that they have magura part but it’s on the left side mines on re side at throttle also lead from condenser not attached to any thing is this a earth lead as other one goes in to amplifiers lmbo22014-01-17 17:32:01

But there are 2 amplifiers, so need 2 condensers? One for each? IF you are going to use them.

No this black tube like condenser only connecting to one amplifier the other lead for it just hanging loose when we connect it to a earth point spark disappears weird or what it’s definitely connected to one of the amplifiers the bike starts when loose lead left hanging

Wonder was this bike converted from points system to electronic at some time dead short n back fire definitely switch gear fault bike earthing to handle bars n internal wires have been dip soldered

There is only one capacitor shown on the diagram, it is connected to the positive supply to both amps, and earth.

Yep condenser wired as Brian says, do you have a wiring diagram?.

Wonder was this bike converted from points system to electronic at some time

This I doubt, the 89 florida was motoplat as standard, a conversion would be expensive.

Ah!! Splash. Eikther this condenser is kaput or as suggested earlier a bad earth is causing it to do strange things when connected like make ign stop working

This raises some interesting questions, like how do you test a capacitor, both for capacity and integrity? I imagine that any 12V DC capacitor of the correct Farad could be used as a replacement?
Does anyone know the rating of this unit? It remains the only component for which I haven’t found a replacement.

Hi Imbo, does your capacitor have any writing on it?lawries2014-01-19 07:26:40

Automotive capacitors rarely have technical details printed on them, in the way normal electronic components do.As this one appears to be just a smoothing capacitor, I’m sure one from an electronic supplier would more than suffice, provided you can mechanically secure it and the wiring to it.As to the size, well it has to be at least 30V working and probably a couple of microfarad at least, though going higher would be unlikely to present a problem. You can do a crude test if you have an ohm meter. Connect the meter across the two terminals. It should read very high resistance, and then the resistance will drop. Reverse the polarity and the same will happen again. If it shows low resistance at the start, it is dead.

nope its a black cylinder shaped thing with two pin connectors one going to a amplifier the other not connected to any thing

Thanks Brian, I’ll give that a go.
Imbo, the capacitor should be wired to both amplifiers and the other end to earth.
Yes, I believe I have the master cylinder and switch gear from the right hand side up for grabs

Ditto. Some DMM's can measure capacitance values, I've got a Fluke that does.

But you have to be able to afford a Fluke first. My £7.99 one doesn’t.

Hi if you have the switch gear for the florida r hand side I will buy it can not get a replacement for mine how much plus postage really appreciate it if you have it I’mstuck may have to go with brembo if I can’t get one could be very expensive
