Progress at last with the outfit. - Cali

Ive now set the brakes up as stock but will run the chair brake
seperately. Thanks for input though, I assumed the rear MC would not
cope with three.

I have got hold of and installed the rear wheel/tyre, I have got the
front brake hoses made up by pirtec in Avonmouth, not cheap but top
quality Earles lines. All is wired but as Ive asked the painter to paint
the chair wheel to match, I can do nowt now until the paintwork is
done. My wife sees the painters ‘domestic catastrophies’ are partly down
to my paying him up front, she may be correct.
Anyway…Today I collected a great buy, a velocet fuel tank, not
sure from what it comes but it fits on the carrier a treat and I guess
holds approx 6 liters. I plan to splice into the fuel feed for the
injection.

Underside.

I was thinking of additional capacity if we ever run onto the continent
with it, so, at a fiver it seemed a gift, what do you lot reckon?

This was posted yesterday, remember this is aimed at those NOT up to date with guzzi stuff…

A little progress yesterday, dropped the gear oil while the exhaust
was off, refilled transmission and re-fitted the exhaust system, for
those unfamiliar with guzzis, the oil filter is INSIDE the sump pan, so I
removed the sump to fit a new filter, a pain but it DOES make you clean
the pan out periodically, the bikes been idle for 7-8 months and the
oil had settled and the inside of the sump was in need of a good clean
out. Put the sump back on with new gaskets.

Had a good nose about while the sump was off, no evidence of prior blowups or bad repairs.

Now, the front upper mount for the chair brackets is a bit tricky, the
reg/rec is mounted just under the headstock, by drilling the mounting
bracket I was able to relocate in 2’’ over to the right.

The ignition coils are another issue though.

While it would have been far better to use a ‘block’ clamp, I just could
not seem to get it installed without fouling the coil assembly, so,
searching through my bracket archive
I found a cast type clamp, I know this is less strong, but the other
three are very tough and I am confident this wont cause me an issue, I
have installed this as close to the headstock as I can and still clear
the coils. You can see the issue in this pic. There is not enough
clearance to relocate the coils over to the right, and no alternative
site for the coils without major headaches, Ill have to run with this.

Just heading back up to the workshop for a few hours, about three today
hopefully, and am pleased that the bike is beginning to look like a bike
again, just hope Im not waiting too long for the body after I run out
of prep work with the bike. I am in a spot where, because I wanted the
hack wheel painted up to match the body, I cannot do anything to mount
the frame as the height of the chassis cannot be set.

Although I am using the little GN ‘Mighty Bullet’ as my son calls it, to
run about in this snow, alopng with my AJS 250 unit, I need this
done…I have a camper van ‘Small RV’ to build before the spring
too. Some pics.

the Camper, its gonna be a pain, but will open the door to more regular
getaways, the Outfit will be dragged on its trailer along with us and
used for running around once the van and its awning etc are set up. At
the mo, its a blank canvass. 2.4 5 cyl diesel, non turbo, S L O W !

And the reason for the old thread revival…this is todays post…Right, just uploaded, off shortly to collect my lad from school so Ill get these up quick.

Minor screwup, once the grey was on, they discovered they did not have
enough gold pinstripe to go between the pearl and dark grey, so they
have laquered it and are going to apply the stripe over the top. Again,
not ideal but just glad to have it done. I had the jerry can done as I
plan to carry fuel on a holder on the back corner of the hack, the guzzi
sticker on this AND the eagles on the hack ARE laquered over.
PICS… All of them.

Hes put the grey on the wheel center too, I dont want to hear ‘fault
finding’ Im just so happy its painted and I can now get on and get this
done. Clive who did the work is a mate Ive known for 20 years and has had serious issues at home lately hence the delay, hes done
this pretty cheap and I gave him free reign to decide where the white
went on the body, and how much to put on, I guess I may have had a
LITTLE less white, but we’ll see when its all together how she looks.
One happy Ginger Bugger.

Im hoping itll be a great outfit once finished. Hopefully It will match up and look the part too.

not sure what to say so

Very tasty! I like the colour scheme, not one I would have thought of but it looks classy.Regards,John

Painter man dropped the wee bits and bobs, mudguards & jerry can etc, off last night, I have to go
collect the sidecar body tomorrow, the grey on the parts is a LITTLE
darker than the grey on the bike. I re-assembled the bike last night,
removed a very complicated alarm system and the heated grips that didnt
fit right and moved around on the bars. Here the last solo pic of this
bike ever. You can see the auxillary tank on the tail, its not plumbed
in yet, will plumb it before our france holiday in the summer.

thats the mutts nutts

Your petrol tank on the rear carrier is from a le velo. With regard to your unit l/l front forks .I rank them up last year and was told I shouldn’t need a steering damper.l have two steering dampers on mine one same as yours the o/e guzzi one and the other steering damper off a vw camper.I was told to remove dampers and tighten up the steering head bearings so they bind!.I have the sidecar off the t3 so I can restore it but will give it a try even though it go’s against the grain.

quick update pic, weather too crappy to clear garage for proper pics, MOT this morning.Surplus parts for sale, check the for sale parts section.

Just spoke with Hagon, it appears that the rear Air Assisted bitubos are struggling a little with the extra weight and its tying itself in knots, particularly with ‘the hammer down’ on a bumpy uphill run. The man at hagons was VERY helpful, stated if I sent him sidecar weight,my weight, passengers weight and whether I would be carryying luggage or towing, which I will be, he could calculate the extra weight capacity requirements and make up a suitable pair. The cost for this was an additional £20 on the list price for the shocks I required. The ones below are fully stainless shrouded so should remain looking good but will they be a bit ‘cruiser-ey’ for my cally?http://www.hagon-shocks.co.uk/catalog/partdetail.aspx?PartNo=34032CC2Has anyone else explored other options at all? Is this likely to be my best option?

I notice that your later photo’s of the LL fork legs are in the rear holes of the swinging arm were in early photo’s there in the front holes. When i queried unit which holes should be used they said the front ones (T3).The rear holes are alignment holes for when the forks are being made. ralph2013-02-04 20:46:38

Ralph, I feel the steering is OVERLY light, so, you may be correct. I shall move the front end back, hopefully that will help. Here is the updates to the build thread I have on the ADV sidecar forum. They are all american, excuse my using yank terminology.

Right, been offline for a few days , got her through her test last thursday, a fair rush in the end but heres the pics and info.

Had to notch out the front upper arm mounting, it just wouldnt sit right
without stressing it and the bracket wanted to sit just where the
verticle brace between the double parallel chassis rails was, amazing
how 1/4 of an inch caused so much head scratching.

That allowed the bracket to butt up closer to the joint.

The triangulation of the lower arms is great, pretty beefy. I am happy
with the arms and clamps, there is generally always a ‘weak’ link or
compromise somewhere, here though I am happy. the rear upper arm is onto
a a clamp which has been fitted with the flange below the straight line
between the two clamps which would have been ideal, the reason is that
the flange on the clamp is cranked off center and wanted to sit with the
flange out of line with the fork fitting, I could have got around this
with MORE lead, I find myself really wanting to keep the lead down to
that MASSIVE 14’’ if poss.

Its fair to say, shes a big old girl. These were just before I lifted the body on, ON MY BLOODY OWN.

\

So, lifted the body on, took her for a spin locally at low speed, steers
great, were the clutch not needed I feel I could ride it one handed.
Got a few pics, a rush putting this together so lots to do to finish,
boot catches etc etc etc. Anyway, first completed pics.

I was really conscious the diference in height between the bike
lights and the sidecar light made the outfit look less than unified,
just experimenting, the trailer light I bought came as a pair, I have
removed the rear bike lights and reg plate assembly and tried to look at
mounting the spare trailer light lower on the bike fender and mounting
the reg plate, centrally on the sidecar, I hope to get this right in the
way that the outfit will look a little more symetrical.

The panic in getting this MOT tested was that my private registration
certificate expired on friday so I had to get in assigned to the bike or
lose it, got it done, now the lengthy fine tuning, interior and
detailing begins.

ordered a pair of these shiny, easy clean, stainless shocks, amazed at
how much info they wanted, my weight, my wifes, my sons, how much
luggage well carry, trailer nose weight, sidecar weight. Amazingly, the
outfit will be dragging over 650 kgs loaded. Never thought of totting that up.
Anyway, the extra calcs involved means an extra charge, but, only £20?? I
think thats fine. £260 all in, will update when Ive tried it out.

This also means I can put the 340mm Bitubos in my harley dyna, the short
shocks are ****ing useless, which may save the road surface on my local
twisties a little.

\

I have just had the bike jacked up in the workshop and fitted the stainless Hagons.

They are a fair bit stiffer, on the softest setting they are similar to
the bitubos on the hardest setting. The damping is far better, its not
bouncing up against the stops like the old ones were. Gave her a run to see how she goes, MASSIVE improvement.
Planning to move the front swingarm back, the steering is a bit too
light, almost leaves you overcompensating for little things and getting
out of shape.knocked up some ‘Toggle Catch’ mounting plates in stainless, the
original catches/latches were very scruffy and the mounting holes were
visible with their replacements in situ, so this covers the holes that I
SHOULD have asked the painter to fill over AND reinforced the boot
latches hopefully preventing the holes from becoming elongated and
making the latches useless.

I bought some LED number plate lights/markers from ebay, they came from
bulgaria and are about three times the size I pictured them. I am having
a rethink ref reg plate now and may get a car one knocked up today and
mount a light on each end of it. I have a 5 digit reg so it should work
out okay, update later. Heres the latch plates.
I AM CURIOUS IF ANYONE IS READING THIS, NO DRAMAS, I CAN STOP POSTING THIS THREAD IF THATS THE WAY? SHALL I STOP OR CONTINUE?

The new rear end. Its never going to be symetrical, but…

Great stuff!

If my wife had her way, there’d be a sidecar on the Cali…
