I got the “clicky clicky no start” action the other day and took the side panel off to start checking the relays/do the wiring mod and found something I don’t understahnd
On the fuse panel I have
3 fuses + 1 randomly spliced in (I assume that there was a loom fault at some time so the panel was bypassed)
AND … 5 relays - a group of 4 and an odd one
Looking at Carl Allinsons’ diagram for my bike (95 Cali carbie) I can see only 4 relays (horn, headlights, starter, sidestand) plus the solenoid on the starter motor.
Firstly please confirm that the solenoid shown on the starter motor is actually on the starter motor and not some weird MG thing that moves it to the fuse panel.
Secondly any idea what this 5 relay is for? Could it just be a spare Luigi put on or does the injected version of this bike have an extra relay - I can’t see it on the appropriate wiring diagram though
Hmm - No knoledge of the bike but i would has a guess that if you have a spliced in fuse and a extra loose relay its been fitted to power a excessory at some time IE spotlights etc but there again it is a Guzzi pull the spare relay out and see if anything stops for a start
Don’t know what your extra one is for, the solenoid is definitely part of the starter.
You have to be careful doing the wiring mod on this model as the headlight relay would be continually powered, which will discharge the battery.
You can get round it by connecting the red/black wire currently connected to 87a on the start relay direct to the blue/black wires you would remove from 30.
This will result in the headlight not switching off when starting as it does now.Brian UK2012-09-19 09:07:05
If you pull out the “spare” one you should see if there are any connections in the block it came out of, if there are NO connections then it is not in use, if there are then there is a good chance it is in use and you could trace the wires back.
Spot lamps
headlight dip main relay (on older bikes)
Alarm
Heated Grips
Horns
Any other accessory
Dunno if these relays are the same as the V11 Le Mans BUT if you look in the manual (or one on line from "this old tractor) they do have the relays listed what I did was then use a tippex pen to mark them up.
If these are the same as the V11 Le Mans just order a set + a spare from “Pyro Dan” quick cheap great service and better then the standard ones. Oh by the way the solenoid can be clearly seen sitting atop the starter motah my friend, the “start relay” ie click no go is either on the block OR a separate relay usually in or around the battery tray on older bikes easy to replace and fix in fact so cheap just get one stick it in and if it goes fine if not it is not the end of the World
No - never got that far due to work and other “things”

I prefer not to start pulling relays out without knowing what they’re for. Sadly there is no way of telling which one does what so a 5th one just confused things more.
I’ll try and get back on it this weekend though I suspect that trying to start the bike when it refused to start hot may have initiated the problem.
Never had the “clicky clicky no start” before - just “hot spin spin no fire” Grrrr
To some extent you can find out what each one does by putting your hand/finger on one then operate horn/headlight etc and feel the click.
You can alsodo it by looking at the colour code on the wires.
I then marked all the relays on mine in case I forgot.
On the V11 sport/lemans the relays are front to back on the bike
1 start relay must be a 5 pin one
2 headlight can be 4 or 5 pin
3 sidestand 4 or 5 pin
4 ECU 4 or 5 pin
5 injector relay 4 or 5 pin
Looking at Carl Alisons diag the start relay has the following wires attached
87=red to starter
87a =red(blue) i think to the headlamp relay 86
30 = 2 off blue (red i think)
85 = red/grey
86=black/white this should go to the start button
Yes, on some later models. But they still have a headlight switch. I never turn the headlight on until the bike has started, just in case the battery is a bit low.
Now spent some time on it and know that the random fuse is to provide an ignition controled supply to the heated grips.
The relays are a different thing.
All five are wired in to the original loom as far as I can see. I’ve identifed 2 (side stand and horn) but can’t get my head around the other 3 yet
The relays are in a group of 4 (including the 2 I’ve identifed) towards the back of the bike with the other one at the opposite end.
The bike appears to have spare wiring/terminations on it elsewhere that I assume at least in part is for the FI version.
If it was the FI verison where are the 2 extra factory relays fitted
Apart from that any ideas as to what I’m looking at?
… that being said during all the messing about I never got “clicky clicky nothing happens” so I wonder if pulling everything out, glaring at it and putting it back “cured” it?
Did you curse it in Italian too? As Mike said,reseating the relays could have cured it.On the injection version the relays are in a row where yours are.
I found when the start relay was failing it does become intermittent , as has been said, press the start whilst touching the relays you will feel the start relay click, relace it.
What happens is the relay contacts get worn, then they stick each time causing a further contaminaion that burns out the coil and it just eventually fails completely, The prime ones for this are the start relay and the indicator relay.
This shows as it sticking now and again, then not, untill it WILL fail.
