Fair enough, does he use gold wire internals ?
Trouble was I didn’t find out how much he’d charge, till FOUR days had passed, all he kept saying was, how good a job he’d do. Could’ve bought another bloody bike, and used this one for spares, now I’m stuck wih the bugger, till I feel I’ve had me money’s worth…
Wow ! thats a lot of dosh
Remember here, I HAD to get it done properly, after me and the wife came back from a Scottish camp, through a hurricane. The bike sat dripping wet in the fettling shed, next morning that very shed was full of smoke…
The wife hit the roof, worried it would burst into flames any second, melting all the other bikes I’ve got, so she told me in no uncertain terms, to get it sorted. Everyone and his dog, told me the Ferret was the best, so in he came. And at the end of the day, it’s only money, what else would I do with it, easy come easy go. Just bloody wish I’d got some other bugger to do it…
Slogged me bleeding guts out getting that, up and down them French motorways, then stuck in a truck for years on end…
Now the sodding thing still isn’t showing a charge, one more chance, then it’s Swan Vesta time…
Just read this whole thread with interest. It seems if all the charging components have either been substituted or replaced, and still no charge, it must be something this weasel bloke has done in the loom. Are you sure the charging light is the correct one, and it’s not been replaced with an LED or some such? The charging system will not work if this bulb is anything other than a 1.2W instrument bulb. I’d take the bike back to the weasel with a list of what you’ve done trying to find this fault…
Failing that a Zippo is a bit more upmarket than a box of Swan Vestas’…
Blimey 400 for the whole job, perhaps …
Well…To end this till I find out, I GIVE UP…
Well done to Moto Guzzi, you’ve beaten the best I know, and ME, something that BSA hasn’t achieved in over 26yrs of ownership, three engine blow ups, and everything in between, but this has done me in. So sod it, I’ll get the bike over to Corsa, let Paul play with it. Can’t use a Swan Vesta, we live in a smokeless zone…
Just to confirm…The charge light and all the lights, are proper bulbs, just like they were when Guzzi put them in place. The Ferret bloke comes to you, you do NOT go to him, he won’t have you, says he’s not got the space. He advertises in the Old Bike Mart, has worked on Henry Cole’s bikes, and a few other TV celebrities, and has a very good reputation. One of the reasons I got him involved in the first place, I’ll pay for quality, you only get what you pay for after all. And I’ve tried in the past to get away with cheapo stuff, and came unstuck. This machine earns my wages, so it’s GOT to be right, can’t risk using inferior stuff just cos it’s cheap, it’ll cost me in the long run…
So THANK YOU all very much for your help, till next time I need it, I’m just going to throw pound notes at it now, that always brings results…
Shaun, from all the stuff above I would suspect a fault in the loom or a bad connection where a wire is attached to a terminal. I would think that having tested or replaced everything else there is not much more it can be. I wish you the best of luck. If you would like me to send you a colour wiring digram send me a PM with your email address.
Best wishes Chris
Chris, thanks for the very kind offer, but I’ve REALLY had it with this bike, it’s going over to Paul at Corsa, once I can get a mate with a van round here, can’t even face riding it now, just too worried it’ll break down on me. Don’t want to HATE the thing do I, it’s a wonderful machine, so darn Right for me, rides and runs just right, and looks bad enough that the light fingered where I park at work, leave it be…
I think while Paul’s got it, I’ll get him to bung on an electronic ignition, been wanting one of them for a while now, smoother running and easier starting, plus no maintenance…
Thing is Shaun, if you want a reliable bike that requires no maintenance, an old Guzzi is not that bike… Keep the old girl for high days and holidays, a Yam Bulldog for day to day running is my recommendation…
Al.
I take issue with that Al !..my old loops pretty good…
I must agree with Kate, my 850T did the commute well as long as I checked the oils and did some minimal maintenance each month I had no major problems.
As is my Convert, and T3 and LM5 before that Chris and Kate, but they do need some involvement, old Guzzis’ will plod on forever, and are over engineered, but no way are they bikes that can be expected to roar into life whatever the weather and however neglected, which is what Shaun requires in a bike for his livelihood.
Al.

A top class Guzzi bloke who knows his stuff.
I was beginning to suspect if somesuch might be the case, i.e. collector’s bikes, etc., with price brackets to match.
I’ve owned old bikes for over 25yrs, I expect nothing from them, except what I put into them. The Guzzi has done me proud in the last 16,000 miles, but this problem has me, and others, stumped. So I’ve given up, and it’s now booked in with Corsa…
It’s a bike I CAN and WILL use for my commute to work, and I’ll be touring on it as well, doing the 100yr thing in Italy, when that comes along. So once again, thank you for the help, and when Paul tells me what he finds, I’ll let you all know…
Al, by the way, what makes you think I neglect the maintenance on my T5…
I do a full service on it every 4000 miles, might not wash the bugger, but it’s serviced, even oil up the UJ in the shaft drive, taken out the bolts that hold the engine in, and copperslip them. Why, I’ve even bought new tyres for it, so tell me…What don’t I do…
How long ago was this rewire done because if under a year their should be a warranty claim.
If not I would still call Towza.
Shaun’s in kent and Towza is 3 hours away in Nottingham so it would add quite a bit to the bill before he even started.
