Ultrasonic cleaner

Hi Team
Any thoughts on what solvent/liquid to put in a small (6"X4"X1")ultrasonic cleaner?

Depends what you’re cleaning.

For less oily parts like carburetors I use water with dishwasher liquid.

It brings them up very nicely.

Thanks for that GTM Have had a dabble with white spirit on some grubby carburettor parts. Will give your idea a go

All sorts can be used
I us carb cleaner designed to clean them in a ultrasonic tank
I have used vinegar diluted with water that cleans fine or any sort of acidic liquid

its a matter of trial and error

these do a good range that I use

Can you recommend a reasonably priced u/s cleaner for occasional small component garage use? By small I’m thinking carburetor bodies as a max.

This company have quite a range.

Hi Lawries,
Mine was yet another ALDI special.
A carb body will fit height and width wise. The bath is 2/3 depth so it’s a matter of cleaning one side and turning it over.

Maplin do them too.

Funnily enough I’d been looking at this last week

Our US collegues swear by Pine Sol. As far as I can see the nearest readilly equivalent over here is Dettol as one of the key ingredients is Pine Oil

Not too expensive and you can literally dump it down the toilet if it dosen’t work

I’ve been waiting for something mucky to give it a go so I’ve not tried it yet but I’ll be interested to see how you get on

Good luck

PS
You can get Pine Sol on Amazon if you fancy a go that

Damn cheap in Maplins currently -a small one delivered for less than a tenner:http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/jpl-ultra-7000-ultrasonic-cleaner-075l-used-b28nr

I mean two tenners! (£20)…

And the winner is…!
Back to back (or opposite halves) of an old 22mm Dell Orto in the ALDI ultrasonic cleaner.
First run with Dettol cleaned up the body a fair bit and made a cracking job of the screws/jets etc that I put in.
Second run was with a kitchen cleaner/degreaser called Elbow Grease (99p from the discount shop). Have to say this was a tad better but not much.
All in all worth a try.
Of course this is merely my observation and I’m sure that more knowledgeable folk will be along soon to tell me that this is wrong

I have no idea just how the V1000 has kept going all these years without ultrasoniks stuff, do I really really NEED one? I kinda throw redex through it once a year guzzibear2014-01-20 21:21:14

I’m like you GB, my old 1000S looks like a sh!t tip, but if some folks want spangly bits on their guzzis, then I like to see that too.

Oh I have shiny alloy …solvol and a finger in an old sock does it, …lol.

Have to say Ray’s vapour blaster is utterly brilliant. The rocker covers on the V11 Le Mans came up real nice and have stayed nice as the blasting seals the surface.

The Guzzi forum rarely disappoints a pessimist

Update.
This works as well as Dettol Dr Johnsons
Similar make up to Dettol as it contains pine sol but no alcohol (cue sniggers;-) )
The carb parts are bright and clean. The body is very clean (including the removal of petrol residue). The body has a dull finish which can be ‘smoothed’ with a bit of polish.

As an aside did you do it with the Dettol hot or cold?
