Warning lights

I have a V50 MkIII, on the binacle housing the warning lights, top right are three red lamps which all come on when the ignition is switched on, apart from the charging light which I still have to sort though the multi meter tells me it is indeed charging. The oil light does what it is supposed to, phew! the other red light comes on with the ignition, it has a strange sign on it that I don’t recognise and it stays on when the bike is running, can anyone tell me what this light indicates as I presume it should go out when the engine is running.
The workshop manual that came with the bike is for a MkII and the warning lights are different to what is fitted to my MkII. There are no MkII manuals currently on ebay but will keep looking.
Thanks for any help with this.

provision of a photograph of said light with strange sign on it might go some way to enabling people to identify it and thus being able to help you out.

This should help

Thanks for the replies, the illustration is just what I needed. Number 12 is listed as "Warning light available so presumably this is a spare, on my bike the light comes on but doesn’t go out when the engine is started and the generator light doesn’t come on at all, I wonder if the bulb holders have been swapped over from number 11 to 12, though if this is the case it still should go out when the engine is started as my multimeter shows the battery voltage at rest as 12.6v and raises to between 13v and 14v when the engine starts. It has been fitted with a new regulator/rectifier and electronic ignition retaining the manual advance and retard.

It’s quite common for a modern combined rectifier/regulator to not have a charge warning light option.
The Bosch alternator does require a slight voltage to energise the rotor through the 2 slip rings so possibly someone has rigged up the extra light to provide power to the rotor.

The wiring diagram I have for your bike does not have any additional warning lights. There are only 7 not 8 lights on the wiring diagram with the wire colours below -

L indicator - Green/black and black/white -ve
R indicator - Pink and black/white -ve
Neutral - Purple and red +ve
Oil - Black/blue and red +ve
Generator - light blue and red +ve
Lights - Yellow and black/white -ve
High beam - Brown and black/white -ve

Check what colour wires you have to light number 12, and maybe add a photo

A copy of my wiring diagram was posted to you yesterday, I hope it helps!

Best wishes Chris

I suppose if number 12 is a spare it would not appear on the wiring diagram. Perhaps it was for an optional extra of some description.

The symbol on number 12 on Don’s post looks like it could be a brake pedal, some Guzzis had a warning light for low brake fluid, the wire to the light would be red/yellow.

Photos would help

P.S. Some models had yellow/white wire to the low fuel warning light

Zooming in on the picture it does look like a brake pedal symbol. The one on my Spada is a red light. The top of the pedal master cylinder should have 2 wires going to it and a float on the underside of the cap.

Yep looks like a picture of a brake pedal to me too.

This would be the cap on the rear master cylinder, has a switch built into it - if you’ve got one. If you have, check fluid level! Or, could just be stuck ‘on’, or has been removed or disconnected but light is wired ‘on’ for some reason. These caps could be troublesome and some people removed them and fitted a plain cap.

Hi Laurie
The warning light with the ‘brake pedal’ is a throw back to earlier models that had a level sensor on the ‘linked’ Master Cylinder, not utilised on your machine.
From your description of the symptoms i would almost guarantee that the wiring has been switched with the Charge Light. Now, it is possible for the charging system to actually be charging and the warning light not go off because the warning light is switched on and off with a separate Diode on the Diode Board/Rectifier and i’m assuming you still have the std Bosch system? If this is the case, replacement of the Diode board/Rectifier and swapping the Wiring to the warning lights will cure the issue.

Good call but without knowing what colour wires feed the brake warning light we cannot be sure if you are correct. I think it is evident that something has been changed in the past and that the V50III shouldn’t have a brake level warning light, but maybe one has been added? Everything on Guzzis is interchangeable across the small block range and also some parts from other models too.

As I said above photos would be good.

Oh, and i also have a MKI / MkII workshop manual if you still need one!

Is it as simple as the side stand down warning?

I’ll bet you my last £5 i’m right!

There wasn’t one on the V50III but that is not to say one was not added!

Thanks for all the responses, lots for me to check. Sorry I have been lax in replying but I have been away at the Jampot Rally and only got back late yesterday. I will try and get a photo of the wiring under the warning light binnacle but difficult to make out what’s what as the wiring has been butchered a lot. It has had fitted a Electrix World RR45 Regulator Rectifier and a Dynatek ignition system which has a misfire on the nearside pot but suspect tyis might be a carb problem.

Just had a thought and checked the strange red light that didn’t go out when the engine started and it is the neutral light in the wrong place so one mystery solved, just the misfire and the generator light to sort.

There was a recent in depth conversation about the Electrex rectifier / regulator just recently. It may or may not help you.

Found the cause of the generator charging light not illuminating, it isn’t connected. The electrix world regulator/rectifier with the Bosch alternator requires a current to wake it up, and this current is supplied via the warning light or connected directly to the ignition switch and bypassing the warning light. If the warning light is incorporated into the system and the bulb blows the alternator won’t charge hence some people like to bypass the warning light. I want to have the warning light and can confirm it lights when connected up. the problem I am having is that the original 1.2w warning lamp bulb does not provide enough current to wake up the alternator and requires a 2watt bulb. Does anyone know what type of lamp bulb is fitted, I can find these wedge bulbs designated T3 or T5 but can’t tell from illustrations and photos which is which. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I can source a 2watt bulb of the correct type?
Thanks in advance
Laurie
