(ditto)
Just started the Guzzi for the first time this year.
Wouldn’t start!

Well sort of, but wouldn’t keep going, kept cutting out.
Hadn’t turned the petrol on!!

You stupid berk …

Just prior to this, I had put new end-float springs and washers on the rocker pins, then I wound up the valve adjusters to take any slack out, then set the inlets at precisely 8 thou, and the exhausts at 9 thou.
Still sounds like shaking two biscuit tins of loose bolts!

Finally got around to looking into making the solid-state regulator work again. This came from Motobins i.e. intended for R-series boxers but same charging circuit innit.
When I first tried fitting this in 2013 it didn’t work, (red) dashboard charging light stayed lit and no charging Volts. As it was just a small part of a much bigger bike rebuilding sesh, I couldn’t spend any time on it so put the old reg back on so it would work for the time being.
I had a brainwave recently, since the SS reg has electronic gizmos in it, maybe it’s just a case of needing a bit of extra external power to get it going. The current from the dash bulb (100 mA) is not enough so how about shunting the charge light bulb with a resistor in parallel?
I chose a 33 Ohms 25 Watt metal clad jobbie A. 'cause I had it; B. it would be quite easy to install somewhere…

It’s connected between regulator input, i.e. red wire on rectifier, and output of fuse 3 (or 1 or 2) i.e. any point that goes live only when ignition key is on. (Otherwise would be a permanent current drain e.g. if connected direct to battery +.)

New reg temporarily dangling from connector…

Total current is roughly 430 mA, 330 mA plus 100 mA of charge light bulb, so is not in any way excessive (about 5 Watts), yet raises the Voltage drop across regulator to about 2V which is enough to bias on the output transistor stage.
And it works! 14V at 2,000 rpm. Result …

Installified…

Miko nice spot of busking it there.
Just popping out for a blat on the Cali now, night rides enhanced always by that strange main beam idiot light, surely the closest in this World to Terry Pratchett’s octarine (The Colour of Magic).
Phil
Ta Phil.
Forgot to mention, dash charge light still goes on and off as normal.
That all sounds highly industrious.
Yesterday I stirred the Pearl and we rode over to FD’s in Dunmow to pick up the side panels that they had been respraying for Brown - in a lovely metalflake brown - naturally. They look gorgeous - if you like that kind of thing.
From there I doubled back and kept on going to meet up with a pal at his gaff in Stowmarket before we went on further into the wilds of Suffick to see Clive at So-Low. He’s been working on my Bantam Boardtracker project. The hard tail is looking great, but the girders I’d picked up for this are not going to fit without major surgery dammit. The current forks are the lightweight type, and look like a couple of cocktail sticks.
After a warm back at home I then rode out Harlow way at dusk to watch the first meeting of the new season of my favourite speedway team. So all in a very cold couple of hundred miles. But no sign of the graunch all day. Maybe the Pearl has bucked her ideas up fro being left out overnight recently.
I have the same annoying low speed rattle on my breva
its the front disc bobbins
Nothing on a guzzi…but rode over to the Shropshire Classic at Wistanstow…cracking early turnout…saw Mr n Mrs Padge and a few other club members…quite a few customised new V7’s about…a very pleasant mornin…and Dooky was a good boy and started when kicked !..
I moved my breva in and out of the garage
decided to tidy it up while the sun shines, although its bloody cold now that my neighbour has built a brickshithouse next to the wall !!
be nice when they have finished and I can get it out past the gates
Stuck Blue up on the table and swapped out the enricher plungers. Spring from the LH side fired itself off into the deep dark depths of the garage. Doh. Ended up stripping out one of the old remote plungers I had in the spares tin to get at that spring. Then spent sometime agonising over the lack of slack on the RH side, before finding I’d left the trigger in the on position. Double doh. It was that kind of day I suppose. Charged the battery, though it didn’t need much. Think we’re ready for an MOT and some VED once the new month ushers in. Not pressing the button until then.
Rode the S3 down to Brighton for The Pioneer Run, along with mate Adam on his S3 and Baz on his 1200 Sport. Left home at 6.30am, very cold most of the way there, not much sun in Brighton, sun came out at least for ride back round M25. A few other Guzzis there, said hello to Paul and Serena.
Toddled off to the camping and outdoors shop on the V7 loop to get a new sleeping bag ready for the clocks forward. I’m fed up with shivery nights in the old one which is so narrow it’s like a straight jacket. The wife was amused to find me trying out the new purchase for size on the living room floor.
Nothing funny about that, that’s very serious business sleeping bag testing

Doesn’t it tho…
Pearl…Pearl…ha, watched a bit of Last of the Summer Wine yesterday…do you have a Howard and a Marina as well ?..
Hmmmm
The Black Pearl, originally Wicked Wench, is a fictional ship in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. In the screenplay, the Black Pearl is easily recognized by her distinctive black hull and sails. The ship was originally named Wicked Wench before she was ordered burned and sunk by Lord Beckett. She was later raised from the sea floor by Davy Jones after making a pact with Jack Sparrow who rechristened her the Black Pearl. She is said to be “nigh uncatchable”.

Refitted this alu Rita cover, after I’d lacquered it first. (No, lacquered, not knackered.

)
(Actually did it yesterday, but didn’t have time to post it…)

First tho I had to find it ~ previously I had put the original plastic one back on, then couldn’t find the alu one again. I had put it away safely in my jiffy bag of special tools! So safe, I couldn’t find it again! Only found it this time 'cause I’d gone into the bag for something completely different …
For the benefit of other Rita users, the best timing angle I’ve currently got it set at is, at static, the 0 degrees line ‘D’ central in bell-housing aperture, and where the rotor ridge is dead inline with the pick-up pole piece as shown:

It really doesn’t want to be any more advanced than this or noticeable low-speed pinking may result.
HTH
Thanks for the info Mike, and please excuse my ignorance, which in the case of computer stuff and some other areas is admittedly vast, but how do I get to see the pictures that you seem to have been putting on here for the last year or so? I’ve tried clicking on those little boxes with every button available to me and nothing ever happens. Unless of course my mouse is poorly…
G4C, somewhere in your browser options you’ve got ‘display embedded content’ or somesuch disabled.
Have a tinker around in your settings, you can’t break it - just reset to defaults if you get it knotted.
Phil
Thanks for the tip Phil, I’ll give it a try.
