Fixed the screen fixing bolt loss situation with a permanent solution: cable tied the bugger. Vibrate this!
The ethanol-affected tank still fits on its stud in this condition. I’ve never used E10 rating and actually used Super for the first year I had it, reverting again to Super now since reading that other thread, though the information is from 2011, note
y’do what y’can.
With regard to these plastic tanks becoming misshapen due to the Ethanol in the fuel I have been told that if you put the tank in a freezer it will return to it’s former size and shape. As I don’t have an appropriately sized freezer it’s not something I have been able to try out but I live with the constant fear that if I remove the tank from my Breva it might not go back on.
The V7C will be having the weekend off in favour of the correct tool for the job - the mighty Flying Banana will be there in all its meltdown-waiting-to-happen unmodified glory. The bodges surely can’t be long coming, now.
Left the Pearl out in the yard all night. Figured some aversion therapy might sort the graunch issue. She’s gonna take me to the docs and then swimming later, if we’re still talking.
Yesterday after some work got my newly acquired T3 (Last October) out for a shakedown run, Just like I remember my original bike I sold as a deposit on my first flat in 1980!Â
Went to the Borders and Mid-Wales meet on The-Big-Red-One. Furthest I’ve been yet - 60 miles each way. My wrist held up ok and all seemed ok with the bike. Got home and back in the garage to find this
Looks like the big seal has let go in the drive box. I’ve had 3 Guzzis with 4 drive boxes and this will make 4 times I’ve had to do this job. Replacing the seal’s not hard but, it’s usually failed because there’s a rust spot somewhere on the drive hub. Out of the 3 I’ve done before - 1 cleaned up with a scotchbrite pad, 1 had a pit filled with epoxy filler and 1 was so bad it had to be replaced. Wonder what I’ll find this time.
It’s a nuisance but it’s what you get when you run a bike that’s stood unused for quite some time. I’m still aiming to get to the clocks forward though.
John - you’ve got the later bevel box like mine. I’ve found it tends to pressurise when freshly filled, so needs the filler cracking open when first heated up. By the way, do you know that level plug is in the wrong place on some of these? Correct fill level is 360cc, but oil runs out of the level hole at about 250cc.
Ian
Yes, it’s the later type bevel box and is one of those with the level plug in the wrong place. My V7Sport has the same type but with the relocated level plug. I never use them anyway but drain the box over night then add the measured amount of oil and moly. Those level plugs only work when the swing arm is parallel to the ground anyway and you have to take the shocks off to do that. I do “burp” the drive box as well.
I’ve had it all apart today and, as expected the drive hub was pretty rusty where the oil seal runs.
I wasn’t sure how well it would clean up. I spent about an hour and a half with the scotchbrite pad and I think it will be OK.
I found there was no gasket between the pinion carrier and the swing arm so have made one ready for refitting. I’m waiting for the replacement seal to arrive.
Of course I drained that smelly gear oil from the box into a pan then stood on the edge of it. Nasty stinky stuff.
The other day I knocked a plastic tub off the saddle with some tiny screws in it, 2 remained in, 4 vanished between the paving slabs, amazingly I found them all again with a magnet on a stick
Finished putting The-Big-Red-One back together after changing the bevel box oil seal. Then went for a run to Aberystwyth and back (40miles ish). No oil leak. Result.
Pleasure and pain - sunny ride to the dentist on V7Classic.
Meandered back through Newton-under-Roseberry, Great Ayton etc. with perfect timing to eyeball a Vincent Black Shadow pulling up for me at a roundabout.
The pudding-basin’d pilot had a one-piece black leather racing suit and our oddball twins were complemented by his support vehicle - a modern touring boxer BMW. Smiles, nods.
I rather think it was God out with St. Peter for a burn up. Mine’s running well, nothing dropped off
