- Put my V7 loop back together after treating it to new boots.
- Ordered a rear carrier for it from TLM. Ready for the clocks forward.
- Managed to get it on its centre stand all by myself! I didn’t have to call on her indoors to help so my wrist must be getting better.
Took mine for it’s MOT and a celebratory blast after it passed.
Rode it to the National Motorcycle Museum under a cloudless blue sky…and back…
Took the Pearl out to Maldon to pick up my powder coated bits. Then over to Dunmow to check the colour match of the metal flake I’m having applied to the side panels of Brown. Glorious weather, made me wish I had my passport in my pocket and some gear on the back. Well, not ‘gear’ exactly …
Got a graunchy issue that I’ll post up on the small block section.
Finished installing and wiring up the auxilary red LED daytime tail lamp plus brake light function (2 levels of brightness) plus flasher (viz 2 quick initial flashes of brake light then steady lit), and, tested it. Christ it’s bright …

… makes the normal tail/brake light (twin 5/21W bulbs) look dim and orange…
this LED lamp is just under the back edge rear carrier and Givi baseplate, so is on the same level as the indicators, as it happens (they’re on the carrier too).
Great Dunmow ? on the A120 ? used to do a rally there back many many years ago maybe early-mid 1980’s, early Feb, pub was the Saling Oak and the rally was called ‘Up Your Pipe’ called that because the guy who run it smoked a pipe, his nickname was, and still is. Radar , think the pub has had a upmarket makeover since.url]

Not really on the A120 anymore, as it has been bypassed

MoT’d at Dave Clark’s on Sturday.
Whilst having a new rear BT45 fitted a bloke turned up on a very nice white Eldo.
He had 110/90’s front and rear and wanted a 120/90 fitted to the rear.
I pursuaded him to check his manual(he had recently imported the bike) as I was fairley certain the front should be a 100/90.
Bloke also owns a T3, lives in Kidlington and is club member.
I have never seen him before.
Strange.
Yeah it is that Great Dunmow and as Mike says, now bypassed. The Pub itself is now known as Palm Trees, looks like a shoddy web site:
http://www.palmtreesrestaurant.co.uk/
I tend to think of it as the Trees Lounge when I’m riding by; ignoring the bypass when I’m on one of the clunkers. There was some comedy going on up there when they put in a whole load of life sized internally but brightly illuminated palm trees. Turned out they needed planning permission that the planners then got sniffy over. Braintree Auto Club used to run banger racing on the grounds almost opposite. Lost when the new road went in.
Any hows. I reassembled my original V50 pillion pegs from the pile of powder coated bits late yesterday and then stuck them back on the bike. Looking rather splendid, though somewhat at odds with the rest of the old gal.
Eno…V7s should have the same size front and rear methinx…x
Originally V7s had 4.00x18 front and rear of a universal type. It’s getting difficult to find good universal tyres or fronts in that size. Perceived wisdom is to still put a 4.00x18 on the back and a metric 100/90-18 on the front, if your preferred maker provides them. These are basically 4in wide but only 90% (3.6in) high. If you put a metric tyre on the back, go for 110/90-18 as, although wider, it will be about 4in tall and will preserve the rolling radius.
Some people like to use 110/90 on the front as it fills the mudguard better and a 120/90 will fit on the back. The fatter tyres make them handle “more slowly” I’m told.
I’ve just changed the tyres on my V7 and chose Michelin tyres in 4.00x18 and 100/90-18. https://racingrhino.wordpress.com/2015/03/06/new-boots-6-mar-2015/
Thanks for that.
So 110/90 front and rear appears to be a good compromise.
Overtyring my LM111 certainly slows it down. Macadam M50’s which are about 4mm narrower than spec size made it a far better cornerer.
I suppose the lower profile must effect speedo accuracy to some small degree at least.
Meanwhile, following on from the reported graunch issue and with time on my hands I figured I’d look further into that last night. So Blue got wheeled back over to the ‘bike-port’ to tuck in between Hardley and Floater, then the Pearl went up on the table. Pulled the back end off for a rummage around. Issues from that reported under the small block forum area. But it did bring home just how sorry and neglected this bike is in places. The whole rear of the box is steeped in oil and road dirt. I have a lot of float where the shift shaft and the boss in the rear casing have worn – that manifests itself in an inch or two slop at the pedal now, making for a less than ideal shift that you just kind of ride around. Anyway, it’s all back together, and will need a couple of half decent proving rides to check I did the reassembly right before I venture further afield I suppose.
Went to see Roy at O&S…NBS…on me loop…did a spot of trials riding down the track…
V7Classic, Trundled with a low RPM ceiling to the filling station after a detour and mindfart had me running on fumes recently.
Ethanol supplement over five years has given the bike an increased range, stretching the tank from 15l into 15.25l, apparently.
Rattling from the nacelle area still a mystery - tried wadding various cables but still present and unaffected by a(nother) screen fixing bolt falling out.
Phil
:lol:Phil…that’ll be the ethanol meltin the tank !..x
Oo-er! And so if you take it off the frame it will be longer than what the bolt holes say when you come to put it back on…
Should look interesting by the time the capacity goes through the 17l mark though.
Smug…after 2 days and 3 nights of sousing these blighters in WD I fully expected a snap-bazza experience but no, a bit of torque, some moderate technical tapping they extracted under duress, thought one had gone or stripped thread the way it behaved. Anyway, stainless items in place, as is a large Dalmore. ![]()
