What did you do with your Moto Guzzi today? 2024

It would be nice to konw WHY it died (not saying you have to find out)

The earth lead from the battery to the gearbox had come loose somehow, so presumably causing spikes in the voltage.
I expect I tugged the lead a bit when changing the battery a while ago and it has been slowly unscrewing itself for a while now. I had noticed the voltage on the voltmeter in the dash was a bit low and the charging light glowing very slightly when out at night the other week.

Interesting. I had mine blow just before I went to Mandello last September. It was the older design with round power transistors. I put it down to leaving the ignition on too long whole proving my rewire. If the timing is in wrong place the tranny can overheat, which it did quite dramatically. Not 100% sure because I had also fitted a Sachse reg/rectifier which also blew, so couldn’t tell precisely what the cause was. I fitted a new Newtronic, refitted old rectifier and a new regulator from Gutsibits. I bought a spare Newtronics and took it to Mandello with me but it wasnt needed. The Sachse unit was just out of warranty but was repaired free of charge, which was good of them but I’m reluctant to refit it as things are working fine. Earthing wasn’t an issue as I included in line earths in my new loom.

I took the Special out of the garage for the first time since July and it took me to Grumpys for an egg and bacon baguette and a black coffee. Round trip of 122 miles.

Technically this is over the last 3 days.

I found that a Sport 1100i wheels are anything BUT light!
Failed an MOT because the tyre had been fitted with the direction arrow the wrong way. All my rebuilding was ‘pass first time’, including aligning the headlamp
Passed an MOT once the tyre was on the right way.
Found that the clutch cable actuator (no idea what it’s called) under the bike was missing an R-clip, now replaced.
Finally found a way to tie the bike to the Motolug trailer that works.

Today, I found that my new Shoei helmet is not good for being tucked in whilst snaking round twisties, it sits too low on my forehead. Not like my old Arai RX7. But it is a lot more comfortable and I love the built in sun visor, so it’s forgiven.

Visited the Guzzi dealer in Glasgow - highly recommend a visit! Then Peebles for food!

You could try the Motolegends trick of a slim sponge underneath the top lining of your helmet!

I watched a clever friend work out where the wiring goes on my '78 V35 from a mixture of Mk1and Mk3 looms.

Got my V7 Classic up and running…
Having had to push it home last time out, convinced the battery was good, I dug through the ‘usual suspects’, took the ignition switch apart, and the clutch interlock, start button and Kill Switch, undid checked, cleaned every leccy connector I could find, replaced a burnt out connector (the alternator - reg/rec one…check yours now if you’ve not lately.!), dismantled the starter motor and put back together… still no joy.
Finally found although my battery was happily holding a charge, it carried virtually nil amps, so naff all cranking power.
£36 for a replacement (bargain from the Battery Warehouse in Grimsby)… and woohoo, it fired first time…
That’ll teach me (especially as advice from the folks on here said check that first).

Wow - where is it located?

Under the tank on my V7.
Easiest way is to follow the wire off the alternator pickup I’d guess.
Part of my race prep on dirt bikes back in the day was checking, cleaning and protecting any leccy connections with silicone grease on the exposed outside ends (I used silicone as I could ‘acquire’ it for free and it protected against water ingress, but I’m sure an electrician on here could advise on a proper alternative).
Though I’d not planned to do the same to the V7 yet, following my starting issues I was ‘encouraged’ to take a look, turns out it was a good move to check stuff.

Fitted a Denali Soundbomb Mini horn :hear_no_evil:

After looking carefully, I need to remove the very worn side stand bracket and get it corrected. I think it will need building up and grinding back to make it true.

There is a chunk out of the side stand where it has been hitting the exhaust clamp nut for years. So that’s been moved around, but the stand still hits the exhaust. I reckon it’s due to the wear on the mounting bracket.

Went down to Buckingham to collect a Stornello engine in bits. I do have a spare frame so see another long term project starting!
The guy has a few nice looking singles for sale, a 110cc Zigolo, a 175 Lodola and a Galleto if anyone is after an old Guzzi single.
