Ive got a 95 cali 1100i which had no spark, but everything else: lights, horn , it would turn over… recently connected it up to a battery just to turn the engine over and theres nothing. Like a main fuse has blown.
Ive changed all the fuses and relays under the right side panel, are there any other fuses, am i missong something. Hate electrics…the devils work
Electrics can be a complete pain when they don’t work. It takes patience and logical thinking to study the wiring diagram and to follow the wires on the bike.
Here is a link to the wiring diagram I hope it helps.
i may have to book a week off work… but thanks…ill try and get it blown up , the wiring diagram, not the bike
@Chris950s produces some excellent laminated wiring diagrams for many of the Guzzi models. Hopefully he will be along soon and will be abe to let you know if he has one for your bike.
Dodgy kill switch ???
The Kill switch is a good call, also clean and check all of the earths for good connection.
The nearest wiring diagram I have drawn is for the 1999 Cali 1100i and looks different to Carl Allison’s that Don has posted above.
Please confirm the number of warning lights on the dash 6 or 8?
Please let us know how you get on. Chris
Sidestand cut out switch, kill switch?
The side stand cutout switch only disables the power to the ECU and also the starter relay, so everything else would work, as you have suggested. I would look at this cutout switch first, try connecting the grey wire on the cutout to earth, that should bypass the cutout.
Ill look at that cheers, if its something that simple ill be fuming
Side stand switch problems are quite common, they live out in the weather under the bike and get road spray etc in the wet. check and clean the spade terminals and if that doesn’t work connect the two wires together that fit on the switch or connect the grey wire to earth.
Unfortunately I do not have a wiring diagram for your bike that I have produced myself, I will add it to the list. It may take some time though as I shy away from bikes with CPUs as the wiring is more complicated!
Best of luck!
Have a look at the ignition switch, either it may have gone faulty (squirt some WD40 into it and turn it on and off a few times) or to check one of the wires hasn’t pulled out the bottom when investigating other problems.
I have a really bad copy of the wiring diagram for this bike in an owner’s manual, but it is so bad it is hard to read in places. If anyone has a decent copy I would be able to give better advice.
As Don says, it could be the ignition switch but I still think it is either the side stand cutout switch or the side stand solenoid. If everything else works apart from the spark I’m sure it is something like that.
By the way Carl Allison’s diagram shows pink wires from the ignition switch, via the RH handlebar kill switch to the side stand solenoid, these wires should be white.
Ok I’ve found a better copy of the workshop manual, if I was not so busy with work I’d draw it!
I hope the advice above sorts out your problem.
There are a few issues with Carl Allison’s diagram apart from the white wires as noted above.
The pink wire from the hazard switch via the connector terminal C and then splits to LH handle bar switch gear terminal A and also separately to the flasher unit, all of these wire should be orange.
The red wire from the connector block terminal H to the RH switch gear connector block terminal should be red/black as should the other red wire from the RH switch gear to the headlamp relay.
The brown and brown/black wires seem to be ok but they look orange to me.
Red/black wires seem to be ok but they look pink/black to me.
I will look in more detail when I have time. Chris
Watching this with interest as I also have a '95 Cali 1100i - not having this problem (yet?!) but always good to know the potential problems/fixes.
Hope you get to the root of it soon.
Still looking, the side stand switch looks a mess, just wondering if i can by pass this completely…so to sum up still no closer to sorting it. Ill let you know if or when i do
Yes you can bypass it, just connect the grey wire to the side stand relay number 41 on the wiring diagram) to the black wire (earth) .
Check if there is power to the RH handlebar switch by disconnecting it and testing (with the ignition on) the white wire coming from the ignition switch. If no power it is the ignition switch, clean all the contacts, and spray with WD or similar and turn the key on and off loads of times.
If this cures it and you then have power to the RH handlebar switch and the bike still has no spark then trace the white wire from the switch down to the side stand relay (number 41 on the wiring diagram) remember these are shown pink but you will find they are all white wires. With the ignition on test the white wire at the relay, if there is power there and still no spark it is probably the side stand switch that is faulty or connections corroded. If there is no power there it will be the kill switch, again check all the contacts and spray the kill switch and use it loads!
If all of this is good but still no spark, then it could be either the ECU or electronic ignition units. Again check and clean all of the wires in the ignition circuit.
Best of luck Chris
Or get a new switch!
Thanks chris, i’ll get to work. Thanks fir letting me pick your brain. Its not the ecu, ive tried a different ecu still had the same problems
